BOOKS AND BLOGGING PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy is defined as a theory underlying or regarding a sphere of activity or thought. Well, my theory is if I can add at least 10 new books to my Wishlist and move at least 5 older Wishlist selections to my TBR list every month, then life is a ice cream sundae. And if I can find those 10 books from at least 5 new blogs each month then that's the cherry on top.

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!
Well, I've made it almost 5 years now, so for better or worse, I continue on. I tend to blog in spurts as the urge to be creative erupts. As I don't have an artistic bone in my body, you will see very few changes in the layouts. Hey, I'm a reader not an artist like so many of the awesome bloggers I follow. I know you don't always have the time but if you stopped and looked, take a half a minute and say your piece. Recommend a book that you have enjoyed or hated for that matter. Thank you to all who visit.
Oh, and I moved my Google Friend Connect info and share this buttons to the top, as without our friends, who are we?

REVIEW**************
First of all let me me say that this could have been a fabulous 5* book but little care seemed to have been invested in the editing. The timeline over what was the first week of happenings was often referred to as 24 hours ago or yesterday. Seriously, it was all over the place. Not just once but repeatedly in the early chapters of the book. Ivy's number of sisters varied frequently and a brother was thrown in once. Quill's cousin Serena  was referred to as his sister on at least one occasion. And the title of the book really did not fit Quill's character either. There was one mention of a dalliance with a married older woman when he was 21 but hardly enough to be referred to as a rogue during that time period. I think they were going for cutesy and they failed horribly.  Though after about chapter 15 it flowed much more smoothly. One other dislike was I didn't feel like the cover model was even close to the bespectacled, curvy Ivy. This has always been a peeve of mine but now that I read so many books on my Kindle it isn't until I do a review and actually see the cover that it hits me how poor a visualization the publishers do.
Now for what I loved, and there was a lot, the timeline discrepancy just really annoyed me as this is from a big publishing house not the self publishing where these types of errors are forgiven if not forgotten.
This was as much if not more a murder mystery than a romance. And I love a good mystery! Though I figured out who did it before we knew why, I loved it. I'm not a fan of insta-love much though I did like that once Quill realized Ivy was threatened that he also realized the depths of his feelings for her. As the bluestockings were the main characters in the book, there wasn't a lot of the missish behavior, in fact the ladies were quite outspoken and laugh out loud funny. I can't wait to read Daphne's story next as she was probably the most unfiltered of the bunch. Hope we get another good murder mystery as this series has so much potential.

Manda Collins spent her teen years wishing she'd been born a couple of centuries earlier, preferably in the English countryside. Time travel being what it is, she resigned herself to life with electricity and indoor plumbing, and read lots of books. An affinity for books led to a graduate degree in English, followed by another in Librarianship. By day, she works as an academic librarian at a small liberal arts college, where she teaches college students how to navigate the tangled world of academic research. A native of coastal Alabama, Manda lives in the house her mother grew up in with two cats, sometimes a dog, sometimes her sister, and more books than strictly necessary.

Review For FALLING FOR THE GIRL NEXT DOOR by Tera Lynn Childs-* * *

Sloane Whitaker never expected to like living in Texas, but after a few months in the Lone Star State, she has to admit she likes the food, the school, and the boy next door. What she doesn’t like is the fact that half her family is still back in New York. Convincing her dad to relocate to Texas requires making their upcoming visit as perfect as possible. The perfect dinner, the perfect daughter...with the perfect boyfriend.
But when her not-so-perfect boyfriend Tru Dorsey is suddenly not-so-available, Sloane has to find another dad-impressing guy to show off at dinner. Tru himself suggests enlisting the help of a fake boyfriend, but the reality of another guy with Sloane on his arm might be more than Tru can manage. Add in a mysterious blackmailer and a divided family, and Sloane and Tru’s relationship might not be able to handle the heat.
Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains a bad boy next door, the good girl who snags his heart, and one epically disastrous ruse-gone-wrong. Join the fun at your own risk.

The Creative HeArts series is best enjoyed in order
Reading Order:
Book #1 - Ten Things Sloane Hates About Tru
Book#2 - How Willa Got Her Groove Back
Book #3 - Crazy, Stupid, Fauxmance
Book #4 - The Secret Life of A Dream
Book #5 - Falling for the Girl Next Door

Not sure why but never really connected with the characters in this book. I've not read any of the other books in this series but didn't feel that I'd missed anything. Overall, I just didn't feel like there was much of a story here. I also didn't like that their story was told from alternating points of view, Sloane's in 1st person and Tru's from 3rd person. I find that jarring and it made me aware that I was reading. Though the book was only 186 pages it seemed much longer and not in a good way.

Review/Book Trailer-The Society by Jodie Andrefski * * *

Welcome to Trinity Academy’s best-kept secret.
The Society.
You’ve been handpicked by the elite of the elite to become a member. But first you’ll have to prove your worth by making it through Hell Week.
Do you have what it takes?
It’s time to find out.
Samantha Evans knows she’d never get an invite to rush the Society―not after her dad went to jail for insider trading. But after years of relentless bullying at the hands of the Society’s queen bee, Jessica, she’s ready to take down Jessica and the Society one peg at a time from the inside out.
All it’ll take is a bit of computer hacking, a few fake invitations, some eager rushees…and Sam will get her revenge.
Let the games begin.

I gotta admit I wasn't blown away by this book. It did have a redeeming ending to it but I almost feel like this type of book adds to kids thinking bullying is okay. Maybe I've finally reached the point where I need to leave books alone that are intended for the high school age as I truly can't imagine what leads them to make the decisions they do and never do they seem to reach out to an adult. My daughter is a high school teacher and keeps a lending library in her classroom so I try to pass on any appropriate books to her. This is one I'll pass on but I've still got reservations and feel like some books and TV shows tend to glamorize bullying and I tend to get pissed off at this.

Jodie Andrefski has been passionate about reading ever since she was a little girl, when she used to climb trees to escape with a favorite book. She lives and writes in a small town in Pennsylvania with her teenage daughter, and has an older son who is out and about on his own. Though still an avid reader, she now prefers a comfy chair over the crook of a tree. An unapologetic coffee fiend, she's even happier if her java comes with pie.

Andrefski often draws on her background in education and mental health counseling to bring real world experience to her writing. She is a firm believer in the magic of a first kiss, and insists that you should never, ever give up on your dreams. #AlwaysKeepFighting

Second Chance Bride

When Daniel Gardner convinced the residents of his Kansas boomtown to advertise for mail-order brides, he never expected the woman he once loved to respond. But Leah Swann steps off the bride train…pregnant and widowed and in need of a husband. Drawn to protect his fragile childhood friend, Daniel proposes a marriage of convenience.
Seeing her onetime best friend waiting to meet the bride train is a wonderful shock for Leah. After her first rocky marriage, a practical partnership with Daniel sounds perfect—as long as her heart doesn't get involved. But when she starts to fall for her husband, will her plans of a fresh start be ruined…or is a real marriage to Daniel exactly what she needs?

Cowboy Creek: Bringing mail-order brides, and new beginnings, to a Kansas boomtown.

I really wanted to love this book. I love historicals, cowboys and the whole idea of mail-order brides but felt that this story was a bit lacking in details. I wanted more history and more of the bride train. I think it would have benefited more if you could have seen the trip on the train to the new Kansas town. This was a good clean romance and I do so enjoy seeing people get a second  chance at love. In this case, for both of them.

Rock-a-Bye Rescue Guarding Eve\Claiming Caleb by Beth Cornelison, Karen Whiddon-3 *

Title: Rock-a-Bye Rescue Guarding Eve\Claiming Caleb

Paperback: 288 pages
ISBN: 978-0373279760

Two babies in jeopardy…two powerful stories in one!
When an unhinged cult leader escapes custody, he'll stop at nothing to get to two innocent babies…and the foster mothers who stand in his way.

GUARDING EVE by Beth Cornelison

Lila Green goes from foster mom to bodyguard when a storm traps her and six-month-old Eve in a remote mountain cabin with a killer on their heels. Can her neighbor, wounded veteran Dean Hamilton, help them survive?

CLAIMING CALEB by Karen Whiddon

Michelle Morgan must protect her newborn nephew, Caleb—and even work with her ex-fiancé. FBI agent Garrett Ware never wanted children, but now he'll sacrifice everything for this baby…and this woman.

These stories had two things that ordinarily mark a story as a sure winner for me-babies and a second chance at romance. Throw in suspense and bam! I'm loving it. But for some reason neither clicked for me. Possibly because both stories are less than 150 pages each, there wasn't time to give you much of a back story on the "cult's" activities though you did get some on the failed earlier romances of both couples.
I especially found Lila less than sympathetic. She dwelled too much on Dean not telling her exactly what was going on and less with getting her butt in gear and getting the hell out of Dodge when she overheard that the killer was after the baby. Seriously! time for hurt feelings later! Move it woman!  I really just wanted to slap her.
Again, because of the brevity of the stories there really wasn't a lot of build up of suspense. You already knew (and so did they) who was after them so the suspense was a bit flat. Though having read numerous books by both authors, I'll definitely pick up more of their works.

Title: The Shop of Shades and Secrets
Author: Colleen Gleason
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Rating: * * *
Publishers: Colleen Gleason, Inc
(May 3, 2011)
Paperback: 254 pages
ISBN: 978-0615485881
FTC Disclosure: Book that I bought

When Fiona Murphy inherits a small antiques shop from an old man she met only once, she's filled with surprise, confusion and delight and a little bit of terror at having a new responsibility in a life she prefers to be free and easy. As she takes over ownership of the quaint shop, odd things begin to happen. Lights come on and off by themselves, even when they are unplugged and there is a chilly breeze accompanied by the scent of roses even when the windows are closed. H. Gideon Nath, III, is the stiff and oh-so-proper attorney who helps settle Fiona's inheritance, and despite her flightiness and fascination with all things New Age, he finds himself attracted to her against his better judgment. After she finds an unpleasant surprise in one of the shop's closets, scares off an intruder in the store, and uses her skill at palmistry to read Gideon's future--of which she seems to be a part--Fiona begins to realize that her free and easy life is about to change whether she wants it to or not.

First of all let me say, I loved Gleason's Gardella Vampire series. This book, not so much. It wasn't bad, I read it pretty much in one sitting. But it was just okay. I knew who the "bad guy" was pretty much from the start although I kept telling myself that it was so obvious that there would end up being a surprise twist at the end. Nope, no surprise. I did like the feisty Fiona and Gideon wasn't too bad either but the story just didn't  do much for me. While I wouldn't rush out and buy a copy, if you like what was more of a Gothic romance, check it out at the library. If you want to read some really awesome Gleason books check out her Gardella Vampire series. I so loved them and their Victorian setting. I did read that these had been updated for new release but I thought they were pretty durn perfect in their original form.

Review of Better Homes and Hauntings by Molly Harper - 3*

Title: Better Home and Hauntings
Series: Standalone

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Publishers: Pocket Books
(June 24, 2014)
Paperback: 352 pages
ISBN: 978-1476706009

Author of the beloved Half Moon Hollow series of vampire romances (Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs), Molly Harper has created a standalone paranormal romance in which a dilapidated haunted house could bring star-crossed lovers together—if it doesn’t kill them first!
When Nina Linden is hired to landscape a private island off the New England coast, she sees it as her chance to rebuild her failing business after being cheated by her unscrupulous ex. She never expects that her new client, software mogul Deacon Whitney, would see more in her than just a talented gardener. Deacon has paid top dollar to the crews he’s hired to renovate the desolate Whitney estate—he had to, because the bumps, thumps, and unexplained sightings of ghostly figures in nineteenth-century dress are driving workers away faster than he can say “Boo.”
But Nina shows no signs of being scared away, even as she experiences some unnerving apparitions herself. And as the two of them work closely together to restore the mansion’s faded glory, Deacon realizes that he’s found someone who doesn’t seem to like his fortune more than himself—while Nina may have finally found the one man she can trust with her bruised and battered heart.
But something on the island doesn’t believe in true love…and if Nina and Deacon can’t figure out how to put these angry spirits to rest, their own love doesn’t stand a ghost of a chance.

Got to admit, I picked this up to read solely because of my love of everything Molly Harper. Boy was I surprised and disappointed to find instead

“Elena Klovis was supposed to be her kingdom's Cinderella -- the mistreated stepsister who fatefully falls in love with a prince, marries him, and lives happily ever after -- except that the prince is only a child! When Elena's stepmother and her two wicked stepsisters hastily leave town to escape debtors, she is left alone in the empty house to fend for herself. A 21-year old woman with no education, no money, and no hope of ever marrying a highborn man, Elena has only one option: to try to be hired as a servant. (At least she'll be paid for her hard work!) Then fate intervenes. She is taken on as an apprentice to a fairy godmother and is introduced to a life of magic and supernatural creatures.
Elena eventually becomes a fairy godmother herself and revels in helping steer people in the right direction. But when she helps three princes (one extremely handsome, by the way!) on a quest, will she let her emotions get in the way of her responsibilities?
Who says no one lives happily ever after? “

I was a bit hesitant to start this story as I’m a romance reader at heart and a fantasy reader second. This was my first Lackey book and though it wasn’t great, I still have several that I’m anxious to read. There was a lot I liked about the storyline, particularly the snarky dry humor. Who wouldn’t give their right tit to be able to turn that ass of a boyfriend into a braying mule? I loved the interaction of the characters in Elena’s home, they were always good for a laugh and a bit of backstory. I loved the premise of the story as who doesn’t like to see Cinderella get her prince but the story itself was pretty slow and Lackey didn’t allow us to see what was happening as much as telling us. I loved the “where Fairy Godmothers come from” storyline as I don’t think I’ve run into that before. Very nicely done!
But there was a character that I hardily got tired of- “The Tradition”. Yes, it was important that we realize how important “The Tradition” was but I got tired of being hit over the head with “The Tradition” stick. This is an area where allowing us to see what was possible would have made so much more difference than telling us. Despite this I did finish the book and while not a great story, it wasn’t awful either, more middle of the road.

The White Queen: A Novel (Cousins' War) by Philippa Gregory

Paperback: 464 pages
Publisher: Touchstone
ISBN: 1416563695

Presenting a new series set amid the deadly feuds in England known as the Wars of the RosesBrother turns on brother to win the ultimate prize, the throne, in this dazzling account of the wars of the Plantagenets. They ruled before the Tudors, and now Philippa Gregory brings them to life through the dramatic and intimate stories of the secret players: the indomitable women. The White Queen tells the story of Elizabeth Woodville, a woman of extraordinary beauty and ambition, who secretly marries the newly crowned boy king. While Elizabeth rises to the demands of her exalted position and fights for the success of her family, her two sons become the central figures in a famous unsolved mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the lost princes in the Tower of London.
Even though I don’t ordinarily like a book written in 1st person POV, it did not bother me near as much as usual. The White Queen was a vast improvement over The Other Queen although still not as great as her books on Henry VIII’s wives or the royal gardener books which I though were 5 star reads. Even though the novel took place over 20 years, I never reached the point where I really cared about the characters in this story. They seemed pretty flat and frankly not very interesting. This novel did not contain the rich details about the foods, clothing, and parties that I enjoyed so much in the Tudor series. These rich details was what kept me reading as much as the storyline. I loved the intrigue of the Tudor era and though there were some mention of politics in this book not nearly enough that you felt the danger that existed during this time. Gregory tells you about it but you never have that edge of your seat feeling that I got in the Boleyn books. The writing was repetitive to a fault about her ancestor Melusine and I didn’t think it really added anything to the storyline. It felt as though the editor said we need some paranormal to draw in the reader so witches and magic was thrown in the mix. It was an interesting read as I was unfamiliar with this era in English history but not a rush out and buy read. So for that reason I gave it a 3 star rating.
Cousins' War
1. The White Queen (2009)
2. The Red Queen (2010)

The Poison Diaries by Maryrose Wood

Publisher:Balzer + Bray

Jessamine Luxson lives with her father, Thomas, an apothecary, in an isolated cottage near Alnwick Castle. Thomas’s pride and obsession is his locked garden full of dangerous plants, which Jessamine is forbidden to enter.
When a traveler brings an orphan to their cottage, he claims the boy has special gifts that Thomas might value. Jessamine is drawn to the strange but intriguing boy, called Weed. Soon their friendship deepens into love. Finally, Weed shares his secret: He can communicate with plants. For him they have distinct personalities—and some are even murderous. From the locked garden the poisonous plants call to Weed, luring him with promises of deadly power.
When Jessamine falls inexplicably ill, only Weed’s relationship with the Poisons can save her. But Thomas is determined to exploit Weed’s abilities, even if it risks Jessamine’s life—or drives Weed to the brink of madness.…

A very dark story that reminded me a bit of an Edgar Allan Poe tale. There's romance, mystery, magic, and betrayal. I'm just not sure that YA's will enjoy it. It starts out light and a bit sad as Jessamine tells of growing up without a mother and with a father that barely acknowledged her. After Weed comes into her life, an innocent romance develops and her life turns much more upbeat. Then it takes on a more sinister mood when Jessamine takes ill. Although Weed was slow to understand her illness, I had no doubt of the culprit. Can't say that I liked the ending, but if indeed it is a trilogy, maybe I can see why the author chose to end it as she did. Not sure if I'll read the next book if there is one. I'll have to let it germinate a bit to see if takes root or not.

"When Kaylee Cavanaugh screams, someone dies.
So when teen pop star Eden croaks onstage and Kaylee doesn't wail, she knows something is dead wrong. She can't cry for someone who has no soul.
The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad's ironclad curfew and putting her too-hot-to-be-real boyfriend's loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls: a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld--a consequence they can't possibly understand.
Kaylee can't let that happen, even if trying to save their souls means putting her own at risk..."

While, the second book wasn't as easy a read as the first, it definitely gives you a better idea of the Netherworld and Bean Sidhe World. The relationship between Kaylee and Nash is progressing at a moderate rate and is definitely quite believable. I had to work much harder at reading this book and finishing it. For some reason it didn't flow as easily. I had no problem laying it down after only a few chapters of reading. The first book refused to allow you to put it down. This series still has a long way to go yet and I'll definitely buy and read the third book. However, if it doesn't jell better in the next book, due out in June. I'll move on.

With four dukes and one devil, there's no limit on love."

Not the best I've read but.....
While not a great lover of the anthology, I love a full book by my chosen author, these five stories were fairly good. The disappointing thing is that just as you get into the characters, the story is over. I got it primarily because of the Jeaniene Frost short story about Cat and Bones. I was really disappointed as they were only a very, very minor part of the short story. It does give you a taste of other authors that might lead you to checking out their full length novels but I am going to stick to non-anthologies after this.

Rrview Date 12/9/2009

"Joanne Baldwin is a weather warden, who can control the weather and keep it from being more chaotic and destructive than it already is. She is on the run, though, for she is accused of killing a senior warden, which she did, sort of: a thread of corruption runs through some of the most powerful wardens, one of which put a Demon Mark on her and then died. Her only hope now is to get a djinn from her old friend Lewis, who stole three of them^B from the council of the wardens many years ago. As she runs, she picks up a hitchhiker who knows things an ordinary person wouldn't, and who offers help. With djinns and other wardens, including those sent to arrest her, all giving her conflicting information, Joanne never quite knows whom to trust in this romantic escapist romp rife with danger, excitement, and even classic cars."
I enjoyed this book(but didn't love it) and plan on reading the rest of the series. There was a lot of info in the storyline about weather that was a bit overwhelming which is why I only gave it a three star rating. I'm hoping there will be more interaction of the characters in the next book as a lot of the groundwork is laid in this book. The characters were just that, characters in a book, they just never felt quite real to me. I'm all for the science as long as it doesn't take over the whole story which it was very close to doing in this book.I wasn't exactly disappointed but until I read a few more in this series, I'm not sure if I would recommend it as a great series. It did have rather a twist at the end that made me decide to give the series another shot.
