Philosophy is defined as a theory underlying or regarding a sphere of activity or thought. Well, my theory is if I can add at least 10 new books to my Wishlist and move at least 5 older Wishlist selections to my TBR list every month, then life is a ice cream sundae. And if I can find those 10 books from at least 5 new blogs each month then that's the cherry on top.

Well, I've made it almost 5 years now, so for better or worse, I continue on. I tend to blog in spurts as the urge to be creative erupts. As I don't have an artistic bone in my body, you will see very few changes in the layouts. Hey, I'm a reader not an artist like so many of the awesome bloggers I follow. I know you don't always have the time but if you stopped and looked, take a half a minute and say your piece. Recommend a book that you have enjoyed or hated for that matter. Thank you to all who visit.
Oh, and I moved my Google Friend Connect info and share this buttons to the top, as without our friends, who are we?

Jennifer Estep April 2011 Newsletter

Greetings and salutations! Here’s what I’ve been up to lately:
1 Tangled Threads: The fourth Elemental Assassin book, Tangled Threads, will be published on April 26(less than a month now!), and you can read the first chapter here. The book is up for pre-order at Amazonand Barnes & Noble.

Like Spider’s Bite, Web of Lies, and Venom, Tangled Threads focuses on Gin Blanco, an assassin codenamed the Spider who can control the elements of Ice and Stone. When she’s not busy killing people and righting wrongs, Gin runs a barbecue restaurant called the Pork Pit in the fictional Southern metropolis of Ashland. The city is also home to giants, dwarves, vampires, and elementals – Air, Fire, Ice, and Stone.
In Tangled Threads, Mab Monroe hires a deadly assassin named Elektra LaFleur to kill Gin, aka the Spider. But when a little girl is kidnapped, Gin undertakes her most dangerous mission yet — rescue the girl and keep LaFleur from killing them both …
Mythos Academy young adult urban fantasy series: I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve sold a young adult series. Huzzah! It’s called the Mythos Academy series, and it focuses on Gwen Frost, a 17-year-old Gypsy girl with the gift of psychometry magic, or the ability to know an object’s history just by touching it. After a serious freak-out with her magic, Gwen is shipped off to Mythos Academy, a school for the descendants of ancient warriors like Spartans, Valkyries, Amazons, and more.
The first book, Touch of Frost, will be out on July 26. Click here to read the first two chapters. Kiss of Frost, the second book in the series, will be out on Nov. 29. Also, First Frost, a prequel e-short story to the series, will be released in July. Learn more about the series on theMythos Academy page on my website.
Touch of Frost is up for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, while Kiss of Frostis up for pre-order at Amazon.
Free Elemental Assassin short stories online: I’ve written several free short stories to go along with the Elemental Assassin books. All the stories I’ve written so far are available on the Excerpts page of my website.

Spider’s Bite, Web of Lies, and Venom released: The first three books in my Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series — Spider’s Bite, Web of Lies, and Venom — are still available. You can get the books at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and all the other usual book outlets.
Thanks to readers: I just want to thank all the folks who’ve e-mailed me to say how much they’ve enjoyed the books in the Elemental Assassin series. I really appreciate it, and I hope that everyone likes Tangled Threads even more.

I now have bookmarks available for Spider’s Bite, Web of Lies, Venom, and Tangled Threads, as well as some left for Jinx. As always, these are free to readers; however, I do ask that folks send me a self-addressed stamped envelope with two stamps on it in order to receive the bookmarks and help me cover postage costs. To learn how to get the bookmarks, e-mail me.
Congrats to Lesley Camblin and to Amanda Portelli, who both won a free autographed copy of Jinx. Winners, please e-mail me your snail mail addresses so I can send your prizes to you.
All you have to do to be entered in the monthly contest is subscribe to the newsletter. So tell your friends … or not.
I’ll be attending some book conferences in 2011 to promote my Elemental Assassin series. I’ll keep you posted on what’s coming up.
I do tons of guest blogs during the year, and I’ll be doing more guest blogs in 2011 for Tangled Threads and my other releases. I’m happy to do guest blogs any time of year as my schedule allows. If you’d like me to appear on your site, send me an e-mail
Dark Jenny by Alex Bledsoe: Self-proclaimed sword jockey (think private investigator) Eddie LaCrosse is back for another adventure. This series is a great mix of fantasy and noir. If you always wanted Sam Spade to carry a sword, these books are for you.
A Lot Like Love by Julie James: James has penned another smart, sexy, contemporary romance. This book focuses on Jordan Rhodes, a wine seller who will do anything to get her brother out of prison — even work with hunky FBI agent Nick McCall to help take down a seriously bad guy.
Got a good book to share? Send me an e-mail. I’m always on the lookout for new authors to try, and I’ll share recommendations in a future newsletter.
I’ve shared this recipe before, but with summer and all that great fresh fruit coming up, I thought I’d mention it again. This is so quick and easy and so good. Enjoy!
Chelsea’s Cheesecake Dip
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 (8-ounce) container whipped topping
Fresh berries, fruit, graham crackers or cookies
In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar, and lemon juice with an electric mixer until combined. Add in the whipped topping, and stir until fluffy (be sure not to overmix it). Garnish with berries and grated lemon peel, if desired. Serve with fresh fruit, graham crackers, or cookies.
2 Love the newsletter? Hate it? Send me an e-mail and let me know. Until next time, be sure to check out my blog and follow me on Facebook for the latest updates and more. Fringe Renewed for a Fourth Season—WooHoo!

Fringe is no longer on the bubble!
Fox's sci-fi series has been renewed for a full 22-episode fourth season, has confirmed.
Fall 2011 TV scorecard: Which shows are returning? Which aren't?
"Fringe has truly hit a creative stride and has distinguished itself as one of television's most original programs," Kevin Reilly Fox's president of entertainment said in a statement.
Added executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman: "This early pickup comes at a perfect time as we start production on the Season 3 finale. We join the cast and crew in thanking our loyal fans and Fox for allowing us to have this much fun telling stories we love."
In January, Fringe moved to Fridays, often called the programming "death slot" since previous shows such as Firefly, Dollhouse and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles were also shifted to this day and were subsequently canceled. "When we moved the show to Fridays, we asked the fans to follow and they did," Reilly added. "We're thrilled to bring it back for another full season and keep it part of the Fox family."
Despite hitting a series low in the 18 to 49 demographic on Friday, Fringe has been averaging 4.34 million viewers this season.
Fringe airs Fridays at 9/8c on Fox.

Hunting Human by Amanda E. Alvarez-4*

“For two years, Beth Williams has run from the past, and the beast that dwells inside her. She is haunted by memories of being kidnapped and the savage attack that killed her best friend. Now Beth finally thinks she's ready to move on...with Braden Edwards, a charming, irresistibly sexy man who tempts Beth to embrace the present.
But the past lurks closer than Beth realizes. Markko Bolvek, one of the werewolves who kidnapped her, has tracked her to Portland, Oregon, his pursuit fueled by a hunger for vengeance. Only Braden, a werewolf himself, senses the danger shadowing her steps. The Edwards and Bolveks have been enemies for centuries—and despite the instant connection he feels with Beth, Braden isn't sure which side of the war she's on.
With suspicion at odds with their attraction, Beth and Braden must learn to trust one another to stop Markko for good. Can Beth accept the wolf within—and love a man who embodies everything she fears?”
A really good shifter book is hard to lay your hands on and I’ve got to admit, it’s been awhile since I’ve read one. Except for one thing, I would have given this book a 5 star rating. I felt like the author did not follow through on the ending. Mostly, I felt like Braden was more intelligent than Alvarez gave him credit for. I know there needed to be a dramatic ending but that’s all it was, a dramatic ending that just felt rushed and a bit out of character.
Now, what I loved about the story, everything else—the setting, the characters, the backstory, the humor, the shifter world. It all combined to create a story that I hope Alvarez follows up with another book. Beth was a wonderful character as was Braden. Heck the secondary characters were as much fun as the main characters. I especially loved Angie. The emotions were so real I could touch them. I’ve got to admit it surprised me that this was Alvarez’s first book. It definitely had the feel of a tried and true writer and I’ll be really disappointed if we don’t see more. Thank you Amanda for a wonderful read. Now I’m going to have to take Vincent’s final book in the Shifter series, “Alpha”, off my desk (where I’ve been savoring it since it’s release) as I’ve got the shifter fever and it must be fed.

Brought to You by Robert--Giving Up Wine

6d162  mm

I was walking  down the street when I was accosted by a particularly dirty  and shabby-looking homeless woman who asked me for a couple of  dollars for dinner.
I took out my wallet, got out ten  dollars and asked, 'If I give you this money, will you buy  wine with it instead of dinner?'
'No, I had to stop  drinking years ago,' the homeless woman told me.
'Will  you use it to go shopping instead of buying food?' I  asked.
'No, I don't waste time shopping,' the homeless  woman said. 'I need to spend all my time trying to stay  alive.'
'Will you spend this on a beauty salon instead  of food?' I asked..
'Are you NUTS!' replied the homeless  woman... I haven't had my hair done in 20  years!'
'Well,' I said, 'I'm not going to give you the  money. Instead, I'm going to take you out for dinner with my  husband and me tonight.'
The homeless woman was  shocked. 'Won't your husband be furious with you for doing  that? I know I'm dirty, and I probably smell pretty  disgusting.'
I said, 'That's okay. It's important for  him to see what a woman looks like after she has given up  shopping, hair appointments, and wine.'

You're gonna send  it on - aren't you?

The Fairy Godmother by Mercedes Lackey—3 *

11Title: The Fairy Godmother
Author: Mercedes Lackey
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: * * *
Publishers Date: May 1, 2010
Paperback: 496 pages
ISBN: 9780373803330
FTC Disclosure: Net Galley

“Elena Klovis was supposed to be her kingdom's Cinderella -- the mistreated stepsister who fatefully falls in love with a prince, marries him, and lives happily ever after -- except that the prince is only a child! When Elena's stepmother and her two wicked stepsisters hastily leave town to escape debtors, she is left alone in the empty house to fend for herself. A 21-year old woman with no education, no money, and no hope of ever marrying a highborn man, Elena has only one option: to try to be hired as a servant. (At least she'll be paid for her hard work!) Then fate intervenes. She is taken on as an apprentice to a fairy godmother and is introduced to a life of magic and supernatural creatures.
Elena eventually becomes a fairy godmother herself and revels in helping steer people in the right direction. But when she helps three princes (one extremely handsome, by the way!) on a quest, will she let her emotions get in the way of her responsibilities?
Who says no one lives happily ever after? “

I was a bit hesitant to start this story as I’m a romance reader at heart and a fantasy reader second. This was my first Lackey book and though it wasn’t great, I still have several that I’m anxious to read. There was a lot I liked about the storyline, particularly the snarky dry humor. Who wouldn’t give their right tit to be able to turn that ass of a boyfriend into a braying mule? I loved the interaction of the characters in Elena’s home, they were always good for a laugh and a bit of backstory. I loved the premise of the story as who doesn’t like to see Cinderella get her prince but the story itself was pretty slow and Lackey didn’t allow us to see what was happening as much as telling us. I loved the “where Fairy Godmothers come from” storyline as I don’t think I’ve run into that before. Very nicely done!
But there was a character that I hardily got tired of- “The Tradition”. Yes, it was important that we realize how important “The Tradition” was but I got tired of being hit over the head with “The Tradition” stick. This is an area where allowing us to see what was possible would have made so much more difference than telling us. Despite this I did finish the book and while not a great story, it wasn’t awful either, more middle of the road.

Wither by Lauren DeStefano—3 1/2 *

Hardback: 368 pages

By age sixteen, Rhine Ellery has four years left to live. She can thank modern science for this genetic time bomb. A botched effort to create a perfect race has left all males with a lifespan of 25 years, and females with a lifespan of 20 years. Geneticists are seeking a miracle antidote to restore the human race, desperate orphans crowd the population, crime and poverty have skyrocketed, and young girls are being kidnapped and sold as polygamous brides to bear more children.
When Rhine is kidnapped and sold as a bride, she vows to do all she can to escape. Her husband, Linden, is hopelessly in love with her, and Rhine can't bring herself to hate him as much as she'd like to. He opens her to a magical world of wealth and illusion she never thought existed, and it almost makes it possible to ignore the clock ticking away her short life. But Rhine quickly learns that not everything in her new husband's strange world is what it seems. Her father-in-law, an eccentric doctor bent on finding the antidote, is hoarding corpses in the basement. Her fellow sister wives are to be trusted one day and feared the next, and Rhine is desperate to communicate to her twin brother that she is safe and alive. Will Rhine be able to escape--before her time runs out?

While I didn’t fall head over heels in love with this book, I had no problem finishing it. I wanted more though. I wanted more details on the whys-- why this was happening and  why kidnap young girls off the street as the orphanages were full of them. Hopefully, the next book will answer a lot of these. The first couple of chapters were amazing and quite satisfying. DeStefano did an excellent job of world building  and fleshing out the characters. The characters were real and engaging. Their emotions were so intense that you ached for them. That said once I got about 2/3’s of the way through, it began to drag for me. While there were moments that were predictable, it was twisty enough to ensure that I read the next book.

WOOHOO! More than 50 blogs participating so now there are two Kindles being given away. If you haven't commented on all the blogs you have until the end of the month to do so.

Wilder’s Mate Kindle Contest

Today is the release of Wilder’s Mate, the first story in our newBloodhounds series.  Set in an alternate Wild West, the Bloodhounds books have monstrous heroes, evil vampires, gunslinger adventures and a few mad scientists. It’s a lot paranormal, a little bit steampunk (or gaslight, if you prefer) and a whole lot dirty.  Adults only, please!

Think a vampire-hunting bloodhound is dangerous? Try threatening his woman.

Bloodhounds, Book 1
Wilder Harding is a bloodhound, created by the Guild to hunt down and kill vampires on America’s frontier. His enhanced abilities come with a high price: on the full moon, he becomes capable of savagery beyond telling, while the new moon brings a sexual hunger that borders on madness.
Rescuing a weapons inventor from undead kidnappers is just another assignment, though one with an added complication—keeping his hands off the man’s pretty young apprentice, who insists on tagging along.
At odds with polite society, Satira’s only constant has been the aging weapons inventor who treats her like a daughter. She isn’t going to trust Wilder with Nathaniel’s life, not when the Guild might decide the old man isn’t worth saving. Besides, if there’s one thing she’s learned, it’s that brains are more important than brawn.
As the search stretches far longer than Wilder planned, he finds himself fighting against time. If Satira is still at his side when the new moon comes, nothing will stop him from claiming her. Worse, she seems all too willing. If their passion unlocks the beast inside, no one will be safe. Not even the man they’re fighting to save.

Warning: This book contains a crude, gun-slinging, vampire-hunting hero who howls at the full moon and a smart, stubborn heroine who invents mad-scientist weapons. Also included: wild frontier adventures, brothels, danger, betrayal and a good dose of wicked loving in an alternate Wild West.
