BOOKS AND BLOGGING PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy is defined as a theory underlying or regarding a sphere of activity or thought. Well, my theory is if I can add at least 10 new books to my Wishlist and move at least 5 older Wishlist selections to my TBR list every month, then life is a ice cream sundae. And if I can find those 10 books from at least 5 new blogs each month then that's the cherry on top.

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!
Well, I've made it almost 5 years now, so for better or worse, I continue on. I tend to blog in spurts as the urge to be creative erupts. As I don't have an artistic bone in my body, you will see very few changes in the layouts. Hey, I'm a reader not an artist like so many of the awesome bloggers I follow. I know you don't always have the time but if you stopped and looked, take a half a minute and say your piece. Recommend a book that you have enjoyed or hated for that matter. Thank you to all who visit.
Oh, and I moved my Google Friend Connect info and share this buttons to the top, as without our friends, who are we?

Blog Tour & GIFs For THE NOVEMBER GIRL By Lydia Kang

The November Girl
 Lydia Kang
Publication Date: November 7, 2017
Publisher: Entangled Teen

I am Anda, and the lake is my mother. I am the November storms that terrify sailors and sink ships. With their deaths, I keep my little island on Lake Superior alive.
Hector has come here to hide from his family until he turns eighteen. Isle Royale is shut down for the winter, and there’s no one here but me. And now him.
Hector is running from the violence in his life, but violence runs through my veins. I should send him away, to keep him safe. But I’m half human, too, and Hector makes me want to listen to my foolish, half-human heart. And if I do, I can’t protect him from the storms coming for us.

The world building in The November Girl was easy—because it’s contemporary and it’s already exists!

The book takes place on Isle Royale, on Lake Superior. But the hard thing was—I’d never been there.

So there was a flurry of research, Google Earth perusing, book buying, and image hunting that I had to do to learn all about the area, the weather, the transportation, and what life was like on the island. Once I’d had a really good grasp, and I could literally see and feel my way around the island in my mind—then I wrote it.

Months later, I found a local who frequented the Island and could beta read the facts about the island for me, and then—finally—in August of 2016, I got to visit! It was breathtaking. So unspoiled, so lush and wild and beautiful.

And to top it all off? I was so sick on that trip. I’d gotten a terrible cold, and I felt just like Hector on that island (who gets sick in the book as well). It was kind of perfect!

Guest Post-World Building

World building in this series has been a total blast—mostly because I’m getting to delve deeper into what was introduced in the first series. Not to say you HAVE to have read The Dragonrider Chronicles to get this book. You totally don’t. But I am taking what I started there and making it richer, fuller, and really digging into the history of the world.

World building is honestly something I really enjoy. I always start with a map, because geography has such an impact on the way a culture develops, and I go from there. The Maldobar we see in this book is in the midst of rebirth. They’ve just seen the death of a tyrant and the end of a brutal era of war. As the cultures of the humans and elves begin to mesh, Maldobar is redefining itself. Not that all the change has been easy. It’s hard to overcome 20 years of war and hatred. But the proper encouragement and motivations made by those in power have helped to fan the flames of positivity and fuel a new sense of pride and comradery. That may be the only thing that saves them from the foreign threat that the Tibran Empire presents!

Nicole is the author of the children’s fantasy series, THE DRAGONRIDER CHRONICLES, about a young boy’s journey into manhood as he trains to become a dragonrider. She has completed the first two books in the series, and is now working on the third and final book.

Release Day Blitz & Guest Post For THE PLAYBOY PRINCE AND THE NANNY By Donna Alward

Prince Diego Navarro is the “spare” to his brother's "heir". While Raoul performs his crown prince duties with the appropriate sense of nobility and poise, Diego’s garnered a bit of a reputation as a playboy - despite the good he does behind the scenes with his favorite charities.
But when tragedy strikes and his sister-in-law is killed in a car accident, Diego knows it's time for the playboy to step up. If not for his brother, then for his niece and nephew, who now find themselves without a mother.
Which is where Rose Walters comes in.
Rose isn't intimidated by money or glitz. The veteran nanny has worked for the rich and minimally famous, but a manor house is no comparison to a castle… or the handsome princes who live there. However, the worst thing she could possibly do is fall for the gorgeous playboy with a surprising heart of gold. He’s a prince; she’s the help. He lives in the tabloids; she loves her privacy. But when her two darling charges start to play matchmaker, Diego and Rose don’t stand a chance.
The Playboy Prince and the Nanny is the first book in Donna Alward's royal duology.

Why The Princes of Marazur?
I’ll confess, I love royalty stories. Years ago, I wrote a book for Harlequin Romance called The Rancher’s Runaway Princess. You see, I wrote mostly Westerns for Harlequin, but this book was a sneaky way to indulge my secret love of glamour and fantasy: I took my princess, Lucy, and plunked her on a ranch in Alberta. The thing was, for most of her life she never knew who her father was. Finding out turned her life upside down. Of course, by the end of the story she goes back to Marazur, my fictional Mediterranean principality. She has two half-brothers, Raoul and Diego, who do their part to welcome her into the family.
Of course then I wanted to write the brothers. But more cowboys called my name, and then new series, and they stayed, lingering in the back of my mind. Finally last year I asked my editor at St. Martin’s if they’d be interested in the duet and she said YES! So The Playboy Prince and the Nanny was begun, to be followed by The Crown Prince’s Bride in January.
Princess Luciana (Lucy) and her family even have a few cameo appearances!

The Inspiration behind the Princes of Marazur…
When it came to really sitting down and planning out the Princes of Marazur duet, I had to do some serious thinking about my princes. I’d already established them a bit in The Rancher’s Runaway Princess, but this was different. They had more of a walk-on role in that book, and now they were going to be center stage.
I knew that:
Raoul is the Crown Prince, and takes it seriously. That he’s married with a girl and a boy. That he and Diego lost their mother when they were very young, and that Lucy (their half-sister) is born of an affair.
Diego is the “Spare” heir, and he’s the one who rebelled as he grew older, establishing a reputation as a palace bad boy and playboy. Sure, he went to university, but he was more interested in the polo ponies and fillies of other sorts than really studying. I also knew that when the story started, he would need to be trying to shed that reputation, build some credibility, and be an asset to the family.
Sound like anyone else you can think of? #willandharry
I also found myself thinking about the remake of Sabrina that was out years ago, featuring Harrison Ford and Greg Kinnear. Now granted, this heroine isn’t going to fall for Diego and then really realize she’s in love with Raoul. But it does represent a bit of the dynamic between the brothers, much like Linus and David in the movie. Linus doesn’t think David will ever settle down, doesn’t think he takes things seriously, and David’s used to being underestimated. In the end, Linus learns to loosen his stranglehold on his responsibilities and trust David, who is ready to grow up and show there’s more to him than his past reputation.
Of course, once I started writing, the characters took on a life of their own and simply became Diego and Raoul, with their own issues and struggles and triumphs.

Blog Tour & World Building For MURDER BETWEEN THE LINES by Radha Vatsal

Murder Between the Lines

May 2nd 2017
Sourcebooks Landmark
ISBN13: 9781492638926
Paperback, 336 pages

Intrepid journalist Kitty Weeks returns to unearth a murderous conspiracy in this WWI saga.

In the second book in the acclaimed Kitty Weeks Mystery series, Kitty is tasked with writing a story about Westfield Hall, a prestigious girls' boarding school. Tragedy strikes when a student named Elspeth is found frozen to death in Central Park. The doctors proclaim that the girl's sleepwalking was the cause, but Kitty isn't so sure.
Determined to uncover the truth, Kitty must investigate a more chilling scenario—a murder that may involve Elspeth's scientist father and a new invention by Thomas Edison.
For fans of Susan Elia MacNeal and Jacqueline Winspear, Murder Between the Lines is a rich and spirited novel with irresistible charm, combining true historical events with a thrilling mystery.

This book had two of my favorite things-mystery and pre-World War I New York. I adore a book that while getting me totally lost in a murder mystery will also take me on a trip to the early 1900's in New York City. I love seeing the awesome clothes and visiting the sites throughout NY City. This book was chock full of history that often had me going to my laptop to check out and read more in depth on. I haven't read the first book in this series which in no way lessened my enjoyment of it but I do intend to go back and read it as I have fallen in love with this author.

Radha Vatsal"s World Building for MURDER BETWEEN THE LINES

New York City in the 1910s was a changing, mysterious place: it was still Victorian but with definite signs of modernity.  Motorcars whizzed along the streets, department stores bustled with life, New Yorkers rode in subways, hailed cabs, went to the movies, ate out at restaurants, and watched the ball drop in Times Square on New Year’s Eve—and back then most people knew that Times Square was so named because of the New York Times building.

I researched life in the city for Murder Between the Lines, which takes place in late 1915/late 1916, by scouring period newspapers—which was how I found out about the ball drop.  I read advertisements and classifieds for insights into activities and services on offer, and also products for sale.  The advertisements during the period were very colorful and included things we might not think about today—tailoring services, Tecla imitation pearls, ice-skating on an indoor rink at a hotel…

As a New York City resident, and a reader who enjoys being immersed in new worlds (whether by time or place) I also like to think about how my heroine, news reporter Kitty Weeks, moves around the city from point A to B.  At one moment in the novel, she has to travel to the Bowery, a seedy area of Manhattan that’s some distance away from her office.  She wants to take a cab.  Her colleague says they should take the subway.  Now, I know which subway route I’d take in the 2010s to get to the Bowery, but which train would Kitty ride in the 1910s?  Fortunately, I was able to find a tourist guide to New York City from the period, which named and described the routes of the different subway lines, and that helped me map out a route for Kitty.  For me, the authenticity of those details not only adds up to create a rich environment in which Kitty solves crimes but also produces its own obstacles and challenges for her--a young woman out and about in the world at a time when very few women negotiated the larger urban environment outside their homes or beyond their workplaces by on their own.

-Radha Vatsal is the author of the Kitty Weeks mystery series. Her latest book, Murder between the Lines (Sourcebooks), publishes May 2.

Thank you so much Radha for this awesome behind the story look at New York in the 1910's. Your descriptions in the book were so vivid that I had no problem visualizing that time period and I loved looking up several places and events that you mentioned in you story for a deeper look.
