I step inside and gasp. The space is filled with candles. Their lights flicker, casting shadows on the walls. Some tumblers are bigger, filled with shells, others are just small enough to hold the pillars. My heart jumps at the thought of Alex. Who else would have done this? How? He can’t be here. He’s in Miami. Chicago is not his kind of town. Or is it?

I take a few tentative steps inside and discover the flow of candles is endless, continuing from the main room to the bedroom. The air smells of candle wax and salty ocean breeze. I walk in slowly, making my way through the space. The bedroom comes partially into view; it’s completely filled with candles and glowing in their light.

I make my way in and the whole room is on display. A huge bed is surrounded by flickering lights, a chair tucked into the corner by the floor-to-ceiling window with a view of Michigan Avenue. Alex is sitting in the chair, legs spread wide, elbows on the armrests, hands forming a dome, with index fingers touching his lips. He looks at me quizzically, capturing my reaction.

I exhale and visibly relax, his mere presence lowering my stress level by several degrees.

“Hi!” I say in breathless voice, suddenly feeling overcome by the emotions of the day, energy leaving me and the warmth from the wine I had over dinner coming back to claim me. I’m ready to give up control for the night, let him be in charge. I’m way too tired.

My eyes shine with alcohol glaze, or maybe the unshed tears I kept at bay all day long. I step towards him and extend my arms. He’s on his feet and wrapping me in a hug instantaneously. We inhale each other and stand wordlessly in the middle of countless glimmering candles.

Alex finds my lips and kisses me gently, fingers skimming over my cheeks, tucking a loose, curly strand of hair away. Pulling back for just a second to look at my face, he places a gentle kiss on my forehead and tucks me under his chin. I’m so small against him, both physically and emotionally. He is the ever-in-control one. Finally, I feel safe today.

We spend minutes engulfed in each other’s embrace. Candles flicker near and far, on every surface of the suite, creating dancing shadows on the walls.

Finally, I look up at him, feeling calmed and grounded.

Jax Jillian was born in Albuquerque, NM but before she turned a year old, her parents moved east to Harrisburg, PA where she was raised. I paused for a moment. Wiping the dripping water from my nose, I stared at her before I looked away and continued with my thought. “Well, maybe it would be better for you to leave now,” I said, taking a towel from the counter to dry my face and hands before I wrapped them tightly around my cuts. “You know, you should be there for John when he wakes up,” I said, turning around to face her.

“Why are you doing this?” she asked, shaking her head in disgust.

She should be disgusted, running after a man who used her and treated her like shit! Drunken Trent was pissed.

“I’m not doing anything. You’re the one who’s leaving. I’m simply suggesting that you do it sooner rather than drawing it out for later,” I snapped back. I wanted to kick Drunken Trent in the fucking balls for saying that.

“You don’t mean that,” she said, shaking her head once more. “You’re drunk and you’re going to feel like a fucking asshole in the morning for saying that to me.”

“Am I? You see, I don’t think I am. You knew I was an ass coming into this, and I knew you were a pain in mine. Did we really think this could work? I mean it might have, had you not still been in love with your fucking stepbrother!” I roared, the veins in my neck popping out with rage.

“Shut up! Shut—up!” she yelled covering her ears. “You know what? Fine! You want me gone, I’m gone,” she screamed, getting in my face.

She pushed my chest and, because I was so drunk and she was a fucking Amazon, I fell back onto the sink, my back hitting the mirror, sending a crack down the middle of it. “Good, get your sexy, fat ass out of here, baby, because clearly you never gave a fuck about me,” I yelled as she left the bathroom in a hurry.

I pushed myself off the counter and slipped on the tile floor, falling on my ass and hitting my head against the back of the sink. I sat up and finally Drunken Trent was taken down, leaving me to pick up the fucking mess he left behind.

“Lexi!” I yelled, holding my head as I fought off Drunken Trent one last time. I pushed myself away from the sink and stumbled towards the door frame. “Lexi, stop,” I called to her.

She was by the dresser, shoving her things in her bag and grabbing anything else that she might need from mine.

“Save it, asshole,” she spat over her shoulder.

“Kyra does have a way with men, I will admit,” Alec said, glancing away as if remembering her. “I almost gave up everything for her myself, but then she chose you and there was no need. You must have a way with women, Willy, for her to come back to you even after all you did. I suppose that is what I love about Kyra myself; she has a kindness and a ferocity that speaks to me.”

Alec was clearly speaking about my Kyra; the way he described her was accurate and yet the judgements he made about those descriptions seemed tainted somehow, like we were talking about two different people.

“Maybe you should have reconsidered giving it all up,” I suggested. “Would have saved you disappointing your father.”

“Is this your way of connecting with me, Willy? Trying to dug up some compassion. Are you going to tell me how alike we are next? How we had similar childhoods?”

I shook my head. “Not in the slightest. My father loved me and I him.”

That was only half true. My father and I had a great relationship when I was younger, but after his affair with a Djinn, Violet Faith, my father lost my respect. Only in the last few weeks did I realise my father was just following his heart, as I was with Kyra.

Maybe I regretted not telling him I loved him before he was banished, but Alec didn’t need to know that.

“We had a pretty good relationship,” I said with a smile.

Alec breathed slowly through his nose. Clearly I’d hit a nerve. Alec didn’t seem to like the Blood King being his father, but from the sounds of things he was all Alec had ever known.

I couldn’t believe I almost felt sorry for him.

“Enough of this idle chit-chat. There is work to be done, Willy.” Alec picked up a scalpel and ran the blade over my forearm.

I couldn’t hold back the scream as Alec pressed it harder into my skin that just would not break.

“I’m going to have to get more creative, I know,” he said, twisting the blade. “But until I think of a brilliant idea, I’m just going to make you suffer because, one, I want to, and two, the screams of others make it easier to think.”

I involuntarily let out a grunt then bit the inside of my cheek to focus on something else, but it didn’t help. Though no injury occurred, the pain was all too real.

Still, I refused to turn on my ability. When I chose Kyra, I chose to love her and feel everything even the bad things. It was a promise not only to her, but also myself. I could never live up to my full potential if I was unable to experience everything the same way as everyone else.

I had been through so much before this. If everyone else in the world could live with pain then so could I.

I would survive this.

Born and raised in the Rocky Mountains, Anne L. Parks has spent the last 25 years moving all over the United States.
