BOOKS AND BLOGGING PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy is defined as a theory underlying or regarding a sphere of activity or thought. Well, my theory is if I can add at least 10 new books to my Wishlist and move at least 5 older Wishlist selections to my TBR list every month, then life is a ice cream sundae. And if I can find those 10 books from at least 5 new blogs each month then that's the cherry on top.

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!
Well, I've made it almost 5 years now, so for better or worse, I continue on. I tend to blog in spurts as the urge to be creative erupts. As I don't have an artistic bone in my body, you will see very few changes in the layouts. Hey, I'm a reader not an artist like so many of the awesome bloggers I follow. I know you don't always have the time but if you stopped and looked, take a half a minute and say your piece. Recommend a book that you have enjoyed or hated for that matter. Thank you to all who visit.
Oh, and I moved my Google Friend Connect info and share this buttons to the top, as without our friends, who are we?

by Leigh Statham
   Publication Date: Sept 20, 2016
   Publisher: Month9Books
Lady Marguerite Vadnay and her trusty automaton, Outil, have settled into life in New France rather well. Marguerite is top of the class at flight school and her future as an aeropilot is nearly secure. She has everything she wants— except a commission on the pirate hunting dirigible The Renegade. Using every card in her aristocratic arsenal, Marguerite wiggles her way onto the finest warship France has to offer. But as usual, Marguerite’s plans endanger the lives of those she holds dear— only this time no one else is going to save them. As Marguerite and Outil set off on a rescue mission they may not return from, she finally realizes it’s time to reorder her cogs.
This steampunk adventure is littered with facts from The Golden Age of Piracy and follows (not too closely) some of the lives and adventures of the brave men and women who sailed the seas as privateers, pirates and soldiers.

Excerpt
“There it is,” he said.
“There what is?” I looked down and saw the gold mechanical vase. “Oh, the vase thing?”
He shot me a look. “It is not a vase.” He looked down again. “It’s a Chronolier.”
“A what?”
“A Chronolier. It means ‘golden exodus’.”
“Golden exodus?”
“Yes. But in simple, mortal terms even you could understand, it’s a lamp.”
I frowned. “Like a light lamp?”
“No.”
“A lava lamp?”
“What in the hell...no.”
I thought about it some more. Then laughed. “You can’t mean what I think you mean.”
He cocked his head at me. “What is it you think I mean?”
I pointed. “You think that’s a lamp. Like a genie lamp.”
Djinn is the correct term and I don’t think anything. I know.”
How do you know?”
“Because,” he said, “I’m the Djinn it belongs to.”
He didn’t even give me a chance to process that.
“Where is the key?” he asked.
“The key?” I remembered it had fallen off my bed and landed somewhere…
“There.” Irving knelt down and retrieved the key from under my bed.
“So it is,” I mumbled, trying to blink away the approaching dizzy spell.
“Thank Sultan,” he said, examining the key as he stood. He held it up. “This key is quite valuable, Glory St. Pierre. You should try not to be so careless with it.”
“Excuse you? I don’t even know what the fuck you’re talking about!”
Irving rolled his eyes like I was slow and should have caught on already. “You found my Chronolier and you turned this key, at least three times, correct? Which means, I’m yours for three wishes.”
I blinked. “Are you saying–”
“Yes, Glory. I’m a Djinn.” He blew out an impatient breath. “Or a genie. But if you call me that, I will make your life as unpleasant as possible at every opportunity.”
I stared at him. “Okay.” I reached down and dragged my covers off the floor and over my head. “I’m ready to wake up now.” This had to be a dream. I pointed toward the sky. “I blame you for this!” Old Addie would know who I was talking to.
“You are not dreaming, Glory,” Irving said.
The hell I wasn’t. Dude had just told me he was a fucking genie. I better be dreaming.

If you have not checked  out this awesome Steampunk/Time Travel novella, now's the time. The fabulous people at Carina Press have contracted for a full length second book! Woohoo! If you love steampunk and/or time travel you are in for a treat. I've decided to repost my review. As a newish Kindle reader, I still don't find myself getting lost in a story quite the way I do when it's print but this one had me flipping pages and reading from start to finish. This is my first wishlist book for the Spring of 2012.

Kindle: 25,900 words

I'm a time pirate—born in 1810, now a 21st-century woman. I travel through time trying to right wrongs without disrupting the fragile balance between what is and what can never be.
That's why it's vital that I go to 1836 and find the man who conned my brother out of his Time Travel Mechanism as quickly as possible. If the technology falls into the wrong hands, it could change the world as we know it. The notorious Duke of Leister definitely qualifies as the wrong hands. An amateur scientist of the slightly mad variety, he's bound to figure out how to use the TTM sooner rather than later.
I knew this wouldn't be easy. But I wasn't counting on him being as sexy as hell. Or winding up chained to his bed…

Let me say right off the bat, the only disappointment I had in this book was the length. As I was reading it on my Kindle and it had been there for awhile, I didn’t realize it was a novella. This is one of the things I don’t like about a Kindle. When you have a book in your hand you know immediately, wow! it’s 500+ pages so it’s going to last awhile or gee it’s 100 so a very quick read. Not so obvious on a Kindle.
But anyway, CB had me with her first “Wizard of Oz” reference. I totally fell in love with the kick-ass Dorothy and the steampunk/time travel genre.  It actually reminded me a bit of the novella for the “Girl in the Steel Corset”.  Action packed, full of mystery and romance. And that says a lot for a mere 25,900 word story. Oh, I’d love to see this done full length. There was just so much more story untold. I wanted to know more about Gilly and his history. I wanted to know more about Devlin’s time in BedIam. I could have read this for hours but alas it ended just as I got invested in it. If some publisher doesn’t snap up this writer and get the rest of the story, I’m really gonna be pissed. I’m putting this author on my watch list as I expect to see more of her!

The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross 5*

The Girl in the Steel Corset-NET GALLEY

Title: The Girl in the Steel Corset
Author: Kady Cross
Genre: YA Steampunk
Rating: * * * * *
Publishers Date: May 31, 2011
Hardback: 480 pages
ISBN: 0373210337

“In 1897 England, sixteen-year-old Finley Jayne has no one, except the "thing" inside her.
When a young lord tries to take advantage of Finley, she fights back. And wins. But no normal Victorian girl has a darker side that makes her capable of knocking out a full-grown man with one punch..
Only Griffin King sees the magical darkness inside her that says she's special, says she's one of them. The orphaned duke takes her in from the gaslit streets against the wishes of his band of misfits: Emily, who has her own special abilities and an unrequited love for Sam, who is part robot; and Jasper, an American cowboy with a shadowy secret.
Griffin's investigating a criminal called The Machinist, the mastermind behind several recent crimes by automatons. Finley thinks she can help - and finally be a part of something, finally fit in.
But The Machinist wants to tear Griff's little company of strays apart, and it isn't long before trust is tested on all sides. At least Finley knows whose side she's on - even if it seems no one believes her.”

Absolutely, the best YA Steampunk I’ve read to date. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Set in the late 1890’s it contained everything I love about that London era, throw in the steampunk gadgets and it is a solid winner. It has super power action figures (well kinda of), a bit of romance, mystery, drama, and a cast of characters that were all wonderful in their own right. Finley Jayne (don’t you just love that name) has a bit of a Jekyll/Hyde type of personality and when her rich employer’s son tries to push himself on her, that personality takes over. While escaping from him she is injured in a velocycle accident and Griff’s menagerie of strays takes her in. She quickly discovers that this group of people have many other powers and secrets.
Griff’s group is working with the Queen of England to flush out the Machinist, an individual they suspect of turning the machines/androids against the humans. Though the book was told from several POV’s, I was never lost and this book moved at a very fast pace. At nearly 500 pages, it ended way to quickly for me. I’m glad that this is to be a series as I can’t wait to see where their adventures and hopefully romance take them next. Though a young adult book, I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to readers of Cassandra Clare’s books. It was simply awesome! As I read it as an e-book, I didn’t get to drool over the cover too much (it is gorgeous), but I’ve got a copy on order as I know this is one I’ll want to reread and share with others.

O M Grey--Avalon Revisited 4* * * *

Rating: * * * *

Arthur has made his existence as a vampire bearable for over three hundred years by immersing himself in blood and debauchery. Aboard an airship gala, he meets Avalon, an aspiring vampire slayer who sparks fire into Arthur's shriveled heart. Together they try to solve the mystery of several horrendous murders. Cultures clash and pressures rise in this sexy Steampunk Romance.

This was a book I wasn't real sure how to classify-Paranormal Romance?, Historical Fiction?, Steampunk?, Mystery?, Suspense?- but it didn't really matter as it was a jewel. It's the first O M Grey book I'd read and I immediately set out to get more as this was a totally fascinating read.
It was told from Arthur's (Henry VII's brother) point of view. He's living (dead) the good life 300+ years later in Victorian England when he meets a woman that reminds him of his first love Catherine. Well she's not really interested in him until she runs into him several times while searching for the vampire that has murdered several women that he's had sex with. As Arthur knows he didn't kill them, well maybe one of them, he decides to help her discover the killer. The suspense and mystery, along with the hot sexy scenes made this book hard to put down and a very fast read for me.
I love books from this era and Grey did a fabulous job describing the clothes, the parties and the houses of this time. I'm hoping this will be a series as the ending really set it up for another book. This was the first Steampunk I've read and definitely will not be the last.

Steamed by Katie MacAlister

Title: Steamed
Author: Katie MacAlister
Genre: SteamPunk
Rating: * *
Publishers Date: 2/2/10
Paperback: 352  pages
Publisher: Signet
ISBN: 0451229312

When one of Jack Fletcher's nanoelectromechanical system experiments is jostled in his lab, the resulting explosion sends him into the world of his favorite novel-a seemingly Victorian-era world of steampower, aether guns, corsets, and goggles. A world where the lovely and intrepid Octavia Pye captains her airship straight into his heart...

I generally love Katie MacAlister’s books. I loved the premise of this book, the characters , and the romance. However, I didn’t love this book. I thoroughly did not enjoy it at all. And I was forewarned but it was in my TBR pile and I picked it up and tried it anyway. I didn’t like how it was told from first person POV, first from Jack and then from Octavia. I was constantly going back to the chapter’s beginning to figure out who was speaking. Very jarring. I never for a minute got lost in the story and forgot I was reading a book, which for me is the whole pleasure of reading. The secondary characters were just blah.  True this was the first Steam-punk I’d read but I was really looking forward to this new genre. It didn’t completely turn me against this genre but definitely has me backing away from it.
