‘Dark Swan’ is the new graphic novel serial

from Sea Lion Books, based on the series

by urban fantasy author Richelle Mead.

I was lucky enough to get the chance to review Richelle Mead's DARK SWAN only days after reading the print book. I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I’ve always considered graphic novels to be only a step above a comic book ( sorry, hanging my head shamefully). I never realized that they could add so much to a story.
Really, though, I want the whole story, every single paragraph, word, letter and punctuation mark. What reader doesn’t? Seriously, I never would have picked this up on my own. Well, slap me stupid! Boy was I in for a surprise. While I already had a mental picture of most of the characters (what reader doesn’t) in my head. I didn’t find a character at all in the GN that felt out of sync. The colors are bright and distinct while the characters were amazingly active for pictures. I’ve always enjoyed Mead’s vivid action scenes and thought this series would make an excellent movie. Artist Dave Hamann brought these scenes alive with brilliant colors.
I’ve got to admit that I’m not real sure how much I would have enjoyed the GN if I hadn’t just read the book but the storyline was pretty much intact or will be with the addition of the next volume. While I think these graphic novels are a wonderful addition to the series, I just can’t imagine them replacing the books. It would be a bit like seeing all the Harry Potter movies without cracking a book, and yeah, I know that are some people that do just that (shaking my head in disbelief).
While I’m more of a paranormal romance reader than an urban fantasy reader, this series manages to combine the romance with the kick-ass, take no prisoners makeup of the main character. I love the snarky mouth on Eugenie and the way she interacts with Kiyo, a very sexy shapeshifter, and Dorian, the Fairy King. Her three sidekicks also added greatly to the snarky humor in the book. I also greatly enjoyed the fact that I did not pick up on who the bad guy was till it was right in front of me. That alone adds an extra star to my review.
Luckily, I have the rest of the series in my TBR pile so bring it on guys!

I was lucky enough to get to read an ARC of TCHoY&M and unfortunately it only last a day. Wow! Never have 400 pages gone by so fast! When I first started it I knew I was in for a treat, when Brie ends up in a Pizza parlor while waiting to move on. I had a few Beatlejuice moments when she was was handed the D&G (Dead and Gone) handbook but this book is so totally unique that they were only flashes. I was constantly grabbing a tissue to blow my nose and wipe my eyes when only moments before I was laughing out loud. It was amazing at the range of emotions that Rothenberg took me through, much like the 5 stages of grief that Brie had to go through.
The main characters, Brie and Patrick, were so very real and so likeable and one of my favorite things about the book was the music titles for each chapter. They really set the mood for each chapter and kind of gave you a hint of what was upcoming. And even though I don’t listen to music while reading or writing, if I was to reread this book, I’d likely set up the playlist in the background.
It's a sad romantic story that will make you think about your life, family, friends, and loves. It’s a story that as a 14 year old I’d have stayed up all night reading and swore I was too sick to go to school the next day- “see mom, my eyes are so red and swollen”- just so I could finish it. As an adult, I simply stayed up all night and napped the next day. I look forward to reading more by this awesome author. Good job!

I only recently read this series and oh my gosh, it was awesome. I was either gripping the book so hard that the pages were about to tear or bawling my eyes out. I read the trilogy books back to back in probably 4 days and I really tried to make the last book take longer as I did not want it to end. I can't imagine if I'd read these books when they came out and had to wait a year between them. I'd have been crazy. Sometimes being the last one to the party has it's up side. While I seriously doubt the movie could possibly be as good as the books (they never are) and how could they put all the horrific things in the movies that the books covered (no way), I'm still going to see this one as soon as possible. If I was told I couldn't see but one movie this year, this is the one that I'd see.

Which of your characters is most like you?

I wish I could say that I'm clever and mechanically-minded like Cinder, but no—I can't fix anything. I'm much more like Cress, who makes a brief cameo in Cinder and then takes a more starring role in the third book. She's a romantic and a daydreamer and maybe a little on the naïve side—things that could be said about me too—although she does find courage when it's needed most. I think we'd all like to believe we'd have that same inner strength if we ever needed it.

Where do you write?

I have a home office that I've decorated with vintage fairy tale treasures that I've collected (my favorite is a Cinderella cookie jar from the forties) and NaNoWriMo posters, but sometimes writing there starts to feel too much like work. On those days I'll write in bed or take my laptop out for coffee or lunch.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which character from Cinder would you want with you?

Cinder, definitely! She has an internet connection in her brain, complete with the ability to send and receive comms (which are similar to e-mails). We'd just have enough time to enjoy some fresh coconut before we were rescued.

The next book in the Lunar Chronicles is called Scarlet, and is about Little Red Riding Hood. What is appealing to you most about this character as you work on the book?

Scarlet is awesome—she's very independent, a bit temperamental, and has an outspokenness that tends to get her in trouble sometimes. She was raised by her grandmother, an ex-military pilot who now owns a small farm in southern France, who not only taught Scarlet how to fly a spaceship and shoot a gun, but also to have a healthy respect and appreciation for nature. I guess that's a lot of things that appeal to me about her, but she's been a really fun character to write! (The two leading men in Scarlet, Wolf and Captain Thorne, aren't half bad either.)

I am the first born and only girl in my family, and six and nine years separate me and my two brothers. Needless to say, I was alone quite a bit. But being alone gave me plenty of time to indulge my imagination in the world of books. One of the first novels I read was a young adult series that traced the lives of two teenagers in high school, Sweet Valley High. Reading those novels I thought I could do better, and so my quest to write entertaining stories began.

Being an introvert, it took me a long time to feel comfortable enough to let others read my work. How long? Well, the first person to read a story I wrote was my husband. Since then, I’ve been writing professionally for almost nine years now. But it was my daughter who encouraged me to write a book for teens—just one of the reasons I love her so dearly.

I live in Maryland with my husband and three children. If you take away the opinionated teenagers, family drama, overflowing bookshelves and DVDs, my life is pretty boring. But don’t take those things away, since they’re my inspiration.

A: What's it like having powers?
Lindsey: It’s like living a different life, in a different world. You can’t tell anyone, besides the ones who are like you and you definitely can’t go around showing off the power. I feel like I’m two people stuck in one body.

A: What would you change about your power if you could?
Lindsey: I would definitely add an on/off switch to my powers. It sucks that I’m bombarded with the thoughts of others on a constant and daily basis. Now, I can wear black and it dulls the chatter a bit. It works a lot better if the other person is wearing black as well, then the thoughts are totally blocked. But since nobody knows I have this power anyway, it’s kind of hard to expect them to walk around wearing black all the time. And…I don’t like wearing black all the time.

A: Explain your power.
Lindsey: It’s intense when the voice in your head isn’t always your own. As I move past a person in the hallway, I hear their thoughts. It’s a constant chatter that goes on and on until I feel like screaming.

A: What’s your biggest regret?
Lindsey: Not having my parents around to share all this with.

A: What’s your wish for this holiday season?
Lindsey: To fall in love. I’ve watched Krystal and Jake tiptoe around their feelings until finally falling so deeply in love they often forget Sasha and I are around. And lately, Sasha and Antoine have been wandering in their own little love bubble. So I feel a little left out. I’d like to take the plunge, join the world of couples for a change instead of constantly being the odd one out.

Sundog's Carol of the Chins

Everybody loves Christmas carols, don't they? Well, if you have never seen Sundog's Singing Chins rendition of your favorite carol, any carol you can think of, you are in for a treat. Just give them a title and watch them perform. And if you want to shake them up a bit and get a laugh, give them a curse word or two and they'll remind you what Santa does to naughty boys and girls.
