BOOKS AND BLOGGING PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy is defined as a theory underlying or regarding a sphere of activity or thought. Well, my theory is if I can add at least 10 new books to my Wishlist and move at least 5 older Wishlist selections to my TBR list every month, then life is a ice cream sundae. And if I can find those 10 books from at least 5 new blogs each month then that's the cherry on top.

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!
Well, I've made it almost 5 years now, so for better or worse, I continue on. I tend to blog in spurts as the urge to be creative erupts. As I don't have an artistic bone in my body, you will see very few changes in the layouts. Hey, I'm a reader not an artist like so many of the awesome bloggers I follow. I know you don't always have the time but if you stopped and looked, take a half a minute and say your piece. Recommend a book that you have enjoyed or hated for that matter. Thank you to all who visit.
Oh, and I moved my Google Friend Connect info and share this buttons to the top, as without our friends, who are we?

The Vampire Dimitri by Colleen Gleason--- 4 *

Title: The Vampire Dimitri                    1
Author: Colleen Gleason
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Rating: * * * *
Publishers Date: April 19, 2011
Paperback: 384 pages
ISBN: 0778329828
FTC Disclosure: E-copy from Net Galley

“Regency London loves a society wedding - even if there are vampires on the guest list. Dimitri, also known as the Earl of Corvindale, should be delighted that the headstrong Maia Woodmore is getting married. His mortal ward and houseguest has annoyed - and bewitched - the Dracule nobleman too long, and denying his animal cravings grows more excruciating by the day. Marriage will give Miss Woodmore safety, respectability and everything else a proper young lady could wish for. Everything, that is, except passion. In the looming battle between Dracule factions, all pretences will shatter as Maia and Dimitri come together in an unholy union of danger, desperation and fiercest desire.”
At first I was a bit disappointed, because the first third of the book was essentially a retelling of The Vampire Voss, I thought. I then realized it was told from Maia’s point of view and she went from the bossy little know it all to someone who was desperately trying to hold her family together. I loved seeing Maia fight her feelings for Dimitri all the while realizing that he was indeed a vampire. There were several times that Gleason had me laughing out loud at Maia trying to come to terms with it. Gleason has done it again, built a world in Regency London that is totally captivating. I love historical paranormals and though this series isn’t quite as fascinating as Gleason’s “Gardella” books (which if you have not read is well worth your time), I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The “Eyes” Have It Contest Winners and Answers

This is the cover that sparked the “EYES” contest.
Witch Song (Sept 1, 2011)
A novel by
Amber Argyle
witch song The world is changing. Once, Witch Song controlled everything from the winds to the shifting of the seasons-but not anymore. All the Witches are gone, taken captive by a traitor. All but Brusenna. As the echo of their songs fades, the traitor grows stronger. Now she is coming for Brusenna. Her guardian has sworn to protect her, but even he can't stop the Dark Witch. Somehow, Brusenna has to succeed where every other Witch has failed. Find the traitor. Fight her. Defeat her. Because if Brusenna doesn't, there won't be anything left to save.
For my review of WITCH SONG go here.
I only had one entry that got all 20 of the”eyes” correct plus the 5 bonus “eyes”.
Congratulations Gabbie, I tossed your name in the hat two more times for that feat.
I also had 8 others who got all 20 of the original pics correct. You guys got entered
in all three giveaways.
And the 1st place winner (this was anyone who got all 20 correct) was-----
Gabby. You get the ARC of Witch Song and a $10 GC from Amazon/Barnes and Noble or a book up to $10 from Book Depository.
2nd place winner (this is anyone who got at least 14 correct) was---
Brooke. She got all 20 correct and 3 of the bonus pics correct.
3rd place winner (this was anyone who got at least 8 correct) was---
Amy S.  She got 17 correct and 4 of the bonus pics.
Number 4 was the only one that  several people got wrong. Apparently there are two covers out there that the only difference was the “eye” color, which for this contest was awesome. I swear though I didn’t realize that when I chose it. Just dumb luck.
Ladies, I’ve emailed you and you have till 12 PM EST on Aug 31 to contact me with your info. And for those of you who did not win, don’t forget the Back to the Books Giveaway Hop starting Sept 1st and running until the 7th. There are just over 300 blogs participating and I’ll be number 42.
I’ve relisted the cropped pics along with their full cover. So while you are smacking your head and saying “I knew that one”, know that it was lot harder than you think.
There were older books, books that are yet to be released and a couple of e-books. I doubt I’d have gotten half of them. Thanks to all who played.
All my winners have responded and their books or gift cards mailed!

The Vampire Voss by Colleen Gleason – 4 *

Title: The Vampire Voss                     2
Author: Colleen Gleason
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Rating: * * * *
Publishers Date: March 22, 2011
Paperback: 384 pages
ISBN: 9780778329527
FTC Disclosure: E-copy from Net Galley

“Regency London - a dizzying whirl of balls and young ladies pursued by charming men. But the Woodmore sisters are hunted by a more sinister breed: Lucifer's own. Voss, also known as Viscount Dewhurst, relishes the sensual pleasures immortality affords. A member of the Dracule - a cabal of powerful, secretive noblemen marked with a talisman that reveals their bartered souls - the mercenary Voss has remained carefully neutral...until Angelica. Angelica Woodmore possesses the Sight, an ability invaluable to both sides of a looming war among the Dracule. Her very scent envelops Voss in a scarlet fog of hunger - for her body and blood. But he is utterly unprepared for the new desire that overcomes him - to protect her.”

Having read the “Gardella Chronicles” by Gleason and loving them, I was tickled to death to see her new trilogy of historical paranormals. While the level of mystery and suspense wasn’t there as it was in the “Gardella” books, the sex level was definitely sizzling. I love the world that Gleason has created and especially the albatross that is around the neck of every vampire. The first thing they see upon waking (cat, dog, diamonds, a bird) is something that weakens them and can be used to control them. This is definitely a darker read than a lot of paranormal romance out there and I love this darker vampire world.
While I didn’t care for Voss in the beginning, he did begin to grow on me and by the end I thoroughly enjoyed the bantering between him and Angelica. She is a much younger, livelier young woman than her sister, Maia, who is very straight laced. She’s funny and an excellent match for Voss.  This book was a very fast read for me and I pretty much read it from start to finish in hours. Luckily I have the next two books in this series and can start them immediately.

When fifteen-year-old Krystal Bentley moves to Lincoln, Connecticut, her mom's hometown, she assumes her biggest drama will be adjusting to the burbs after living in New York City.
But Lincoln is nothing like Krystal imagined. The weirdness begins when Ricky Watson starts confiding in her. He's cute, funny, a good listener - and everything she'd ever want - except that he was killed nearly a year ago. Krystal's ghost-whispering talents soon lead other "freaks" to her door - Sasha, a rich girl who can literally disappear, and Jake, who moves objects with his mind. All three share a distinctive birthmark in the shape of an M and, fittingly, call themselves the Mystyx. They set out to learn what really happened to Ricky, only to realize that they aren't the only ones with mysterious powers. But if Krystal succeeds in finding out the truth about Ricky's death, will she lose him for good?

I don’t like a book where most of the teen’s angst is due to a parent not telling them the whole story or keeping it from them for the teen’s sake. In fact I don’t like it in an adult book either.  That said, I did enjoy the storyline. It’s nice to see a paranormal that deals with other traits than those of a vamp or shifter.
I didn’t like the character of Krystal in the beginning as she was the “typical” 15 year old, moody, whiny and a brat. However, as she settled more into her new school and made friends with others who had the same mysterious “M” mark on them, it was enlightening to see her come to care about others as they try to solve the mystery of Ricky’s death. I loved seeing her deal with her ability to talk to the dead but was disappointed that she didn’t seem to be inclined to go to her mom or the police about the strange texts she got. She and the other Misfits begin to understand a bit more about their powers as they solve the mystery. I think this new type of paranormal will be a hit with the teens as what teenager hasn’t felt they were a misfit at some time in their life. Can’t wait to read more in this series as I suspect there may be other Misfits who do not use their power for good but for evil purposes.

“It's always been just Kate and her mom-and now her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear her mother won't live past the fall.
Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld-and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.
Kate is sure he's crazy-until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride, and a goddess.
If she fails...”

OMG, I started this just last night and finished by lunch today. Awesome, simply awesome fantasy romance. I so loved the mythology sprinkled throughout the story and the mystery suspense kept me flipping the pages to see what happened next. The final mystery, I did figure out before the author told me but the rest, wow, not a clue. She kept me guessing right up till the final pages.
I really loved the main character Kate. In the beginning, I felt a bit sorry for her as she had basically given up her teenage years to care for her mother who was dying of cancer. Despite spending her whole life in NYC, she agrees to move to a small town, Eden, because her mom wants to die in the town she was born in. She starts her senior year at a new school amongst kids that she has nothing in common with just to make her mom happy. She is way more mature than most 18 year olds are but her unselfishness was a lot of what made me enjoy this book. I heartily get tired of the typical whiny teen depicted in a lot of the YA fiction.
Kate basically agrees to sacrifice her happiness and freedom so that others may live. She must pass 7 tests to show the council that she is worthy of taking her place beside  Henry and ruling the Underworld. While Kate is determined to learn as much about Henry’s world, she must be vigilant as the last dozen girls before her died only months into their time in Henry’s world.
This is by far the best of the YA books I’ve read this year and I imagine that even 8 more months down the road, it will come out on top. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series, “Goddess Interrupted” and up to now have only occasionally read fantasy. The romance, mystery, and suspense has upped my enjoyment to the level that I won’t hesitate to pick up the next fantasy I come upon.

“Born with a rare untreatable blood disorder, 16-year-old Shay knows she will never lead a normal life. She has accepted her fate but longs for the day when people can look beyond her illness and see her for herself. That day comes when her stepfather, Martin, an expert in the field of leukemia research, begins giving her a new type of transfusion. The treatments give her energy, strength, and awesome visions, which stir Shay's desire to live and cause her to want more. She breaks into Martin's office and finds Gabriel, the guy from her visions, chained to a table and sets him free. Kidnapped by him and on the run from Martin, Shay finds her world turned upside down. Crave is a fast-paced, action-packed vampire thriller with an original and refreshing story line. Gabriel's life is beautifully revealed through Shay's visions, and the well-written plot conveys depth and feeling while exploring important issues like friendship, loyalty, trust, love, and betrayal. A satisfying read with a shocking cliff-hanger ending.”

After a slow start, this book takes off at a speed that will not allow you to put it down. The only thing that annoyed me was I went into it thinking it was a stand alone. About 3/4 of the way through it – way before I got to the cliff hanger of all cliff hangers- I knew it could not possibly be wrapped up in one book. Thank goodness I only have to wait till the end of September for the next book-Sacrifice.
The characters in this book were so easy to get into. Sick girl Shay was totally fascinating. The authors did such a great job making you see and feel what she was going through on a daily basis, I have to wonder if one of them knew someone growing up that was terminally ill. Her best friend Olivia was there through thick and thin even when Shay wasn’t as good a friend back to her. And Gabriel, who we don’t actually get to meet until half way through the book, was a character of contradictions, that made him so believable. As a lover of paranormal romance, this was an awesome book. As a lover of YA novels, I felt it hit the nail on the head consistently.  You would think by know I’d be burnt out on vampire books but the authors have taken the oldest, most used, paranormal creature- the vampire- and penned a fresh new tale that will keep me and others up all night reading just one more chapter. I can definitely recommend this for middle school and up, though I (an adult reader) was just as hooked by this great story.

Stronger Than Sin by Caridad Pineiro 4*

Title: Stronger Than Sin
Author: Caridad Pineiro
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Paperback: 336 pages
Publisher: Forever

It's been six months since Liliana Carrera helped her brother rescue Caterina Shaw from Wardwell Laboratories, a group of fringe scientists experimenting on human beings. Now, Liliana--with funding from the FBI--has set up a new facility to continue testing the inhibitor complex, a cure for the patients of Wardwell. What's even better is the FBI has managed to recover another of the patients, Jesse Bradford.
When Jesse arrives at Liliana's facility, he has been drugged and displays violent erratic behavior. As Liliana helps him detox, Jesse demonstrates strange powers--superhuman strength and the ability to heal quickly.
Despite their growing attraction, Jesse is secretive and Liliana remains fearful of him. Eventually he admits that Wardwell scientists threatening his sister's life in order to maintain control over him and his powers. As they try to locate her, they begin to suspect that the scientists may have corrupted the FBI. Unless they can discover Wardwell's master plan soon, Jesse's sister, the other patients, and an unknown number of innocent people, will pay the price.

What can I say about this series other than I love it and Stronger Than Sin was ever bit as fast paced and exciting as Sins of the Flesh. These are not your momma’s paranormals! These are a whole different type of paranormal than the vampire/werewolf variety, but just as totally satisfying. The level of suspense and mystery is built to a very splashy finish and I’m pleased to see that Pineiro has at least two more books in this series coming out so we can return to her world soon. This book can be read as a stand alone but why would you want to.  It is a much richer book if read with Sins of the Flesh. While definitely a paranormal, this book is scariest because the medical aspects of it are not too far out there to make you wonder what if?
We met Dr Lilianna Carrera in the first book and her rich Hispanic heritage is very central in making her the type of doctor and person she is. I loved getting a peek inside her family and it added so much to the book. She is determined to figure out what the “mad scientists” have done to the DNA of their patients and help find a cure so that they can regain control of their lives. This was a very easy and fast read. I finished it in hours as I did not lay it down once I got about a third into it.

Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely, Bk 1) By Melissa Marr

Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely, Bk 1)
Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely, Bk 1)
Author: Melissa Marr
Book Type: Hardcover
Rating:* * * * 1/2
Review Date: 3/13/2009
"The clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in this cool, urban 21st century faery tale. Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries. Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in the mortal world, and would blind her if they knew of her Sight. Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries. Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer. Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention. But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King and has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost! Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working any more, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything. "

Just read this and absolutely fell in love with the fairy world. Even though I read it online and my butt went to sleep several times, I still managed to read this in two days. I like that the outcome is not obvious and there are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. A must read for lovers of paranormal romance. You can read the first 7 chapters free at this link. The author has offered it as a free read so don't pass up the chance to get acquainted with a fabulous new(to me) writer.
