BOOKS AND BLOGGING PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy is defined as a theory underlying or regarding a sphere of activity or thought. Well, my theory is if I can add at least 10 new books to my Wishlist and move at least 5 older Wishlist selections to my TBR list every month, then life is a ice cream sundae. And if I can find those 10 books from at least 5 new blogs each month then that's the cherry on top.

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!
Well, I've made it almost 5 years now, so for better or worse, I continue on. I tend to blog in spurts as the urge to be creative erupts. As I don't have an artistic bone in my body, you will see very few changes in the layouts. Hey, I'm a reader not an artist like so many of the awesome bloggers I follow. I know you don't always have the time but if you stopped and looked, take a half a minute and say your piece. Recommend a book that you have enjoyed or hated for that matter. Thank you to all who visit.

Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment.  Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.
Intellectual freedom—the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered unorthodox or unpopular—provides the foundation for Banned Books Week.  BBW stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them.
The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings.  Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections.  Imagine how many more books might be challenged—and possibly banned or restricted—if librarians, teachers, and booksellers across the country did not use Banned Books Week each year to teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society.
Often challenges are motivated by a desire to protect children from “inappropriate” sexual content or “offensive” language. The following were the top three reasons cited for challenging materials as reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom:
  1. the material was considered to be "sexually explicit"
  2. the material contained "offensive language"
  3. the materials was "unsuited to any age group"
While I’ve got to admit that there are books that I didn’t feel were appropriate for my kids to read at an early age, I don’t recall actually forbidding them to read any book. If they were mature enough to question the appropriateness of a book, then they were mature enough to make that decision. While not a fan of certain books, video games and movies, this is a decision that should be made by each individual and family. I’ve highlighted in yellow the books that I’ve read in the list below . A lot I’m totally unfamiliar with.
My question for your entry in this giveaway is
“What book on this list totally surprises you or which one have you read from this list?”

Bridge to Terabithia surprised me. I have read it and didn't like it, but I don't remember anything controversial about it.

im excited for this giveaway so i'll post my comment now:

Harry Potter was banned?!!!
I'm not surprised Of Mice and Men is banned. Animal Farm should have been there too.
WHY IS GOSSIP GIRL BANNED??? lol I've never read it so I wouldn't know
Not surprised R.L. Stine is in the list. I read "Bitten" and wow.. Freaky.
Overall, I've only read Of Mice and Men from the list.

kara-karina@Nocturnal Book Reviews said...

I can not believe they banned Mark Twain...*shocked* Interestingly enough most of the reasons for banning books you can find in the Bible. However, nobody bans that book from the libraries...

Sarah Reads Too Much said...

Wow! I've read 21 books on that list, and have a couple more on my shelf waiting to be read.

Sarah M said...

I have read quite a few books from the list. I remember reading The Color Purple, I was definitely too young for it at the time. I think I would have a much different reaction to it if I read it now.

Sayeth said...

Farenheit 451 - it ABOUT banning books, yet it got banned? What?

Lexi said...

Are you there God, Its me, Margaret.
Read this in grade school (not my choice but it ended up being ok). But I can't believe that it is a banned, blows my mind.

ebaker said...

scary stories! Okay ridiculous but also not on this list but I read on another list Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you see? So lame....

Jen at Red Hot Books said...

A Judy Blume book, really? That's ridiculous!

Hikablack said...

I've read quite a few of these, but I must say, the one that surprised me most was Captain Underpants. That's like... banning the Powerpuff Girls from airing on TV...

Kayla Eklund said...

The Captain Underpants series suprised me. I loved reading it when I was a kid, and never saw anything controversial about it.

Bleuette said...

I don't know why they would ban Bridge To Terabithia - it's harmless I read it back when I was in grade school.

Alexis @ Reflections of a Bookaholic said...

I'm surprised to see The Giver on this list. I can't figure out what's wrong with it. I love that book.

Birgit said...

I knew about a lot of those books to be on the list, but I had no idea Huckleberry Finn was among them too!? But a lot of the newer publications surprised me too ...

blackplume said...

I've only read a few from the list like the giver. What surprise me that they banned books like HP and Bridge To Terabithia.

Honestly, I'm surprised all those books are on the list. I can't believe there is even a banned book list to begin with.

Thanks for the giveaway!
I have read only 10 out of the books listed, but my favorite one has to be The Catcher in the Rye, which was such an inspiring book for me back in high school :)

I've read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Catcher in the Rye, To Kill A Mockingbird...I understand that books like Brave New World should have some warning (??) - I read that book when I was probably too young to get the idea of whole book and I didn't know what to think abou the book.
But Harry Potter, His Dark Materials, and I've also seen books like Twilight and Hunger Games on the banned-books list...well, it suprise me and sometimes I really don't get it :(

Anonymous said...

To be honest, they all surprise me. I cannot believe that we still have a "top 10 challenged books" in 2011.

Ok so why is Harry Potter a Banned Book? I would have never guessed that!

Check out our giveaway HERE!

jen7waters said...

What book on this list totally surprises you or which one have you read from this list?

Harry Potter! I just CAN'T believe it!
+
His Dark Materials. I really liked both of these series. It's ridiculous to ban these books (any book!!), LOTS of kids and teens like to read because of them.

But I have to say The Lovely Bones didn't surprise me. I loved the book. But it haunted me for days. And I was already a big girl when I read it. O_O

Sofija Kapranova said...

I am surprsed to see Gossip Girl in this list. And of course Mark Twain...

Samantha said...

There are so many of these books that surprise me (many that I've read as well.)

Some I actually studied back in my high school days: We did The Great Gilly Hopkins in Year 7, and Bridge to Terabithia in Year 8.

And the Goosebumps books were challenged/banned? Seriously?

Reader Unfolded said...

I'm not truly surprised by any of them actually. People can find fault in just about anything and people also like to control others (sadly). I think I am probably more surprised by what's not on here rather than what is.

Reader Unfolded said...

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of my favourite books and it also happens to be one of the most challenged! I read it as an adult but I know I would have loved it even more as a teen. I would be really upset knowing that someone tried to take it away from me if they did.

mk said...

When I first started entering BBW giveaways this morning I was shocked to find out that the Harry Potter (series), by J.K. Rowling is on the list. I also went to the ALA site and found out that another one of my favorite series - Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead - is also on the list( I did not see it on the Top 100 but maybe I've missed it). I'm pretty sure I've read only The HP series from this list but I'm looking forward to reading another one- The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
Thank you so much for the giveaway and for making it international.

Okay... I understand why Harry Potter is banned. The whole "OMG WITCHCRAFT RUUUN!" thing, right? Oh... wait. I don't get it.

There are no "bad" messages. Honestly, it promotes so many GOOD values and the themes that run through it all have to do with good triumphing over evil, friendship, love, etc.

I just think it's so ignorant to ban it because characters perform magic. So what?

I was surprised by The Face on The Milk Carton. I checked that book out from the library when I was nine or ten (a long long time ago) and yes it deals with a girl that's kidnapped, but I didn't find any of it so disturbing that it needs to be banned from children's eyes.

Bridge to Terabithia, Are You There God...It's Me Margaret and of course The Harry Potter series is absolute insanity to be on the banned list. I think some people are way to rigid in their thinking and imaginations to want to ban these books. Its one thing to consider age appropriateness quite another to think people should be kept from reading a book all together.

I gotta say I read most of those banned books, and seriously, Harry Potter? Bridge to Terabithia???? That's clearly a MISTAKE!

Amanda said...

I've read quite a few, but of course Fahrenheit 451.

Every time I see Harry Potter on this list it makes me laugh. How could they ban a book with so many messages of friendship and love above everything?!

Thanks for the giveaway! =)

Junie B. Jones? Really? That's crazy. My kids love those books. So sad that some kids are missing out on those great books :(

I am surprised my many of these books. I knew alot of them had been on a list at times, but did not know about Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and Diary of Anne Frank (thought this was a true story). The whole list baffles me. Many of these I had to read in high school (way back when).

I would like to say there were several on the list that surprised me, but honestly there has never been a book published that someone didn't have some objection to. I guess it depends on how vocal they want to be in their objection. I guess "Are you there God? It's me Margaret" surprises me the most. The books on that list that I have read is way too long to be posted here..

I've read Harry Potter, though I'm not really sure why it's be on the list...

I'm surprised that HP is at the top of the list! I'm also surprised that The Giver is there, as it includes controversial topics but doesn't put them in a positive light!

Cindy C Bennett said...

The Giver? A Wrinkle in Time? Harry Potter? Of Mice and men?...

I don't even know where to begin with which book from the list surprises me most - I've read many of them.

Someone mentioned that many of the reasons for these books being banned are in the Bible, but you might be surprised to know that in many places the Bible is also banned.

Misusedinnocence said...

I've read Julie Of The Wolves. Only reason I can think of would be the rape scene?

I was surprised about BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA and the Junie B. Jones books (my niece loved those when she was younger). I guess some people would ban everything if they had their way.

What surprises me in a ridiculous way is that Fahrenheit 451, the book about censorship and book burning, is on the banned book list. Extremely ironic, and just proves a point about how narrow minded and, frankly, dumb people can be.

I'm surprised they banned the His Dark Material trilogy. I love those books.

I've read some of the books on the list. I'm not surprised that these books were banned. I'm pretty sure if everyone read all the books out there, someone somewhere would ban it for some reason.

I have read several of the books on the list and they are the ones that have stayed with me the longest. They are the ones that touched my soul. I don't believe any book should be banned. If you don't like the content don't read it and parents should be the only ones to say what their kids can't read.

I think the one that annoys me the most is And Tango Makes Three. It is about REAL events and REAL penguins. So two male penguins hatched an egg and cared for the chick without a female penguin. SO WHAT! Let's alert the masses to the creepy counterculture plotting being done by PENGUINS. So ridiculous!

Chen Yan Chang said...

I read a lot of the books from this list but from the top 10, I've read The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky!

I actually never read Harry Potter. *ducks from flying tomatoes*

I've read Harry Potter but it's ridiculious that people feel like it's corrupting kids because of witchcraft and saying that it's evil. The whole point of the story is how love can conquer everything even evil!
