BOOKS AND BLOGGING PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy is defined as a theory underlying or regarding a sphere of activity or thought. Well, my theory is if I can add at least 10 new books to my Wishlist and move at least 5 older Wishlist selections to my TBR list every month, then life is a ice cream sundae. And if I can find those 10 books from at least 5 new blogs each month then that's the cherry on top.

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!

NEW VISITORS AND OLD- WELCOME!
Well, I've made it almost 5 years now, so for better or worse, I continue on. I tend to blog in spurts as the urge to be creative erupts. As I don't have an artistic bone in my body, you will see very few changes in the layouts. Hey, I'm a reader not an artist like so many of the awesome bloggers I follow. I know you don't always have the time but if you stopped and looked, take a half a minute and say your piece. Recommend a book that you have enjoyed or hated for that matter. Thank you to all who visit.
Oh, and I moved my Google Friend Connect info and share this buttons to the top, as without our friends, who are we?

SNOWY DAY CONTEST REMINDER

CONTEST ENDS  1/31/11 AT MIDNIGHT EST SO STOP BY COMMENT AND ENTER CONTEST FOR $10 GC

I don’t think there’s anything  better than curling up on the couch with a good mystery or crime drama when it’s cold outside. I’ll grab me a fuzzy blanket, a pillow and curl up on the end of the couch closest to the woodstove and camp out for hours on a good snowy day (or heck any other time I can). As they are calling for snow in the morning, I’m sitting here planning my day tomorrow and laying out a few possibilities. It dawned on me that NOW would be an excellent time to do a giveaway.

The Land of Painted Caves- Tick-Tick-Tick- Almost Time for Release!

I read the first book in this series in 1980, that's been 31 years ago. While the wait for the final book in the series has been the longest for any series I follow, it has given me the time to reread the series several times. I had planned on rereading the whole series before the release of the final book but time has gotten away from me so I'll read and enjoy the final book and then reread the whole series this summer while out at the pool.

Cowboy and The Vampire: A Very Unusual Romance or A Darkly Romantic Mysteryby Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall

“The Cowboy and Vampire” is  back from the dead. Ah, life after death is sweet.

Hays and McFall took note of the vampire resurrection. So did their publisher.

"We looked into the rights for the book, and they decided to reprint it under a different imprint," he said.

"The Cowboy and the Vampire" is back from Midnight Ink, with a new cover. The old cover had a cowboy boot and some blood. The new cover has a sexy babe who looks like she wandered off the "Twilight" set in search of something to eat.

"I thought the old one was more artistic," Hays said. "This was their decision."

Hays and McFall are promoting their book in new ways -- Facebook didn't exist in 1999 and author websites weren't common -- and are planning a sequel. The vampire craze seems to have peaked, but you can never tell.

"It's pretty exciting to be back from the dead," Hays said.

Are you thirstin' for a Bloodscootin' and Blood-tinglin' Romance in an Apocalyptic, Comedic, Vampire Thriller?
Reporter Lizzie Vaughn doesn't know it but she has 2000 years of royal vampire blood coursing through her veins. Tucker, her cowboy boyfriend of six months, doesn't realize that his life and hers are about to take as many twists and turns as a bucking bronco ride.
All that megalomaniac Vampire leader Julius wants is for his horde of maniacal followers to vanquish every living being on the planet, so he can reign over Darkness for all eternity-with Lizzie at his side. There are just a few problems he has to iron out first...
Julius' fatally seductive Vampire consort, Elita, is furious. She wants to be the only woman in Julius' undead life. His archenemy Lazarus, once the most powerful Vampire on the planet, is undoubtedly plotting against Julius and his diabolical scheme. But Lazarus has been living a quiet life, eating HoHos and reading tabloids. Has he lost his taste for bloodshed?

Lizzie herself is being difficult-she doesn't want to be Queen of the Vampires, or as she calls them, "blood-sucking, crazy freaks." Finally, there's Tucker, who is coming for his woman with his dog, his gun, and a couple of ragtag cowhands.

Who will be left when the sun rises?

(this was my original review of the book which I read several years back)
Well, the title says it all. It's definitely a different kind of romance. I just love it when the writer gives you a totally unconceived version of how vampires came to be. You will love it and Lizzie's cowboy, his family, and friends. Enough humor to keep the story from dragging on too long and enough biblical fact to make you go hummm. Definitely worth your time to read. Just wish there was  another book to look forward to with Lizzie, Tucker and of course wonder dog Rex.

An extraordinary faerie tale of magic and mystery, romance and danger, described by Stephenie Meyer as 'a remarkable debut'. Laurel is an ordinary fifteen-year-old high school girl. But something incredible is happening to her. She is changing. Now Laurel is about to discover that a deep and powerful magic holds the key to her destiny.

I really wasn’t planning on reading Wings today, but only because I didn’t have the second book in the series yet. And if you’ve read any of my other book reviews you know I generally wait till I’ve got 3 or 4 of the books in a series before I start it. However, I made the mistake of glancing at the first couple of pages. First thing I knew about an hour had past and I was well beyond the point where I could stop. I had heard this book compared to “Twilight” and Meyer had a nice little blurb on the cover, “A Remarkable Debut”.  Boy was everyone right on the money. This book was so refreshing and though I heard it mentioned that it started slow, I didn’t think so. I can see why others have compared it to “Twilight” as it left me with a feeling of total satisfaction when I finished it (gleefully knowing that there were to be 4 books in this series). While I’d have loved it to have been the length of “Twilight”, I have the satisfaction of knowing that book 2, “Spells”, is on its way to me as we speak and “Illusions” is due out May of 2011. Pike’s modern mythology of faeries was fascinating and a joy to watch unfold. I do hope we find out more about the faeries history as the next book unfolds but again the characters, the world building and the action within the story was an awesome thing to behold.

Arthur has made his existence as a vampire bearable for over three hundred years by immersing himself in blood and debauchery. Aboard an airship gala, he meets Avalon, an aspiring vampire slayer who sparks fire into Arthur's shriveled heart. Together they try to solve the mystery of several horrendous murders. Cultures clash and pressures rise in this sexy Steampunk Romance.

This was a book I wasn't real sure how to classify-Paranormal Romance?, Historical Fiction?, Steampunk?, Mystery?, Suspense?- but it didn't really matter as it was a jewel. It's the first O M Grey book I'd read and I immediately set out to get more as this was a totally fascinating read.
It was told from Arthur's (Henry VII's brother) point of view. He's living (dead) the good life 300+ years later in Victorian England when he meets a woman that reminds him of his first love Catherine. Well she's not really interested in him until she runs into him several times while searching for the vampire that has murdered several women that he's had sex with. As Arthur knows he didn't kill them, well maybe one of them, he decides to help her discover the killer. The suspense and mystery, along with the hot sexy scenes made this book hard to put down and a very fast read for me.
I love books from this era and Grey did a fabulous job describing the clothes, the parties and the houses of this time. I'm hoping this will be a series as the ending really set it up for another book. This was the first Steampunk I've read and definitely will not be the last.

Lynn Viehl- Dreamveil 4 1/2*

Title: Dreamveil
Author: Lynn Viehl
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Rating: * * * *1/2
Publishers Date: 6/1/10
Paperback: 336 pages
Publisher: Onyx
ISBN: 0451412885
FTC Disclosure: I purchased

Rowan Dietrich grew up on the streets. Now she's out to start anew, find a job-and keep her identity as a Kyndred secret, as well as her ability to "dreamveil" herself into the object of others' desires.

But Rowan isn't using her gift when world-class chef Jean-Marc Dansant is stricken by her beauty and strength. And when dark secrets from her past threaten her new life and love, Rowan realizes she can't run forever...

Lynn Viehl is one of only about a half dozen authors who are on my auto buy list without ever reading review one. While at first I didn’t think I would like the other half of the Darkyn series, Kyndred, as much as the first half of the series, this book totally convinced me it was a winner. While the Kyndred doesn’t have the rich historical focus that made me fall in love with this series back in 2005, this book has so many twists and turns that it has blown me away. I’ll think I have a thing or two figured out and Viehl’s storyline takes a whole other turn that makes me smile and shake my head with satisfaction. The mystery and suspense is worthy of several Patterson books I’ve read and definitely more entertaining. This is NOT a series that can be read out of order and why would you want to? The characters in this series have been superb and I loved the setting of this book in a French restaurant.  I started this book late in the afternoon and did not lay it down until I finished the last word in it. I just picked up the next book “Frostfire” and am planning an all night read tomorrow night.

I list both series here because they go together as far as I'm concerned. You can't enjoy one without the other.
Darkyn
1. If Angels Burn (2005)
2. Private Demon (2005)
3. Dark Need (2006)
4. Night Lost (2007)
5. Evermore (2008)
6. Twilight Fall (2008)
7. Stay the Night (2009)
Kyndred
1. Shadowlight (2009)
2. Dreamveil (2010)
3. Frostfire (2011)

"I was standing there naked when my dead husband walked into my bathroom..."
Lillie St. Claire is a Talent, one of the rare few who can permanently dispatch the spirits of the dead that walk the earth. Her skills are in demand in a haunted country, where a plague of ghosts is becoming a civic nuisance.

Those skills bring her into conflict with frightened citizens who view Talents as near-demons. Her husband comes to see her as a Freak; so when Nathan dies after a car crash, she is relieved to be free of his increasingly vicious presence. Lillie expects to be haunted by Nathan's ghost, but not to become Suspect #1 for her husband's murder and reanimation.

But what's most surprising of all is the growing attraction between her and psi-crime detective John Thresher. He thinks that Lillie killed Nathan--and Nathan must agree, because his zombie is seeking revenge. Now she and Thresher must work together to solve her husband's murder--before his corpse kills her...

I finally gave in and got a Kindle at Christmas and one of the first things I did was download all the Net Galley books that the generous publishers had given me to read. I had only read a few as I totally hated to read on my PC. But it was a whole different ballgame reading on the Kindle. The fact that the first book I read on the Kindle, Dark and Disorderly, was purely coincidental. And boy am I glad it was first, because it was fabulous.  I loved the trip that Harris took us on and look forward to more books in this series. Please, please say it’s going to be a series.

First of all the opening sentence, “I was standing there naked when my dead husband walked into my bathroom..." now tell me how can that not hook you?
Harris’s characters Lillie and Thresher caused sparks every time they ran into one another. I just loved the spunky spit fire Talent. Her job (talent) was to dispatch ghosts in this alternate world where everyone knew about ghosts, zombies and other such creatures.
Despite the fact that someone or something seemed intent on doing away with her, she was going to do her job. This was a fun read that once I got about a third of the way through, was unable to lay down till I had finished it and solved the mystery. There was a lot of action and excitement that kept me clutching the book (er Kindle). Oh, and the scene where Lillie is hunting a missing girl and the little ditty “Ding dong dell” just made me want to gather the child up, much as Lillie did before I burst into tears. I loved the world that Harris created and hope we will see more of Lillie and Thresher. The only jarring thing I found was some of the “big” words where simpler would have been better. But hey, I got to use the nice feature on my Kindle that immediately told me the meaning
of any words that were in doubt whereas I’d probably not have bothered to double check the meaning if it meant looking it up in Websters. I’ve heard other reviewers compare this book to Harrison’s and Armstrong’s and while I agree, I honestly think it was a whole different take on the paranormal that was outstanding on its own.
